UK government abandons Ukrainian refugees, leaves hundreds homeless
Official figures revealed that hundreds of Ukrainian families are homeless in England despite government promises to secure housing for them, The Guardian reported.
The website highlighted that "at least 480 Ukrainian families and 180 single adults have applied to councils for help with homelessness" since the end of February.
Although the UK government insisted that the Homes for Ukraine and family visa schemes would ensure housing for refugees, the two are abandoning people after housing arrangements break down.
The figure shows that 145 placements made by the Home for Ukraine scheme ended in homelessness by June 3.
“Across the country, there is no consistent approach to rematching guests with new hosts, no standard way for Ukrainians to change their visa sponsors, and no single mechanism for moving funding from one host to another," considered Lauren Scott, executive director of Refugees at Home.
“It is a nightmare situation – the very one that we had hoped to avoid,” she expressed.
The Guardian pointed out that "many local authorities are treating Ukrainian families as homeless rather than attempting to rematch them with new hosts, leaving them in hostels and hotels, just as happened with Afghan refugees."
Out of the 145 ended Homes for Ukraine placements, only 20 were rematched with a new host.
On his part, the chief executive of the Refugee Council, Enver Solomon, considered that “it is worrying to see that desperate Ukrainian families who have fled war, endured trauma and heartbreak, arriving here, entrusting their safety in our hands, to have been left to fall into homelessness."
“We’re concerned that Ukrainians arriving on family visas are running into problems as not all relatives will have the space or the resources to support their family members – which is why there needs to be the same level of funding available to them and local councils as is provided under the Homes for Ukraine scheme," Solomon expressed.
Lisa Nandy MP, shadow leveling up and housing secretary, said the UK government "has failed miserably to play its part. Ministers were warned about the risk of refugees becoming homeless on the day they launched the sponsorship scheme, but they were more interested in grandstanding in television studios than doing their jobs to protect vulnerable people."
A UK government spokesperson noted that more than 77,200 Ukrainians have arrived in the UK since the beginning of the war.

According to online court records, the case was dismissed without prejudice, meaning prosecutors can still refilethe charges. When questioned Friday about the effort to locate the old records, a spokesperson for Leavitt’s office said he was traveling and could not immediately provide answers.
During his news conference, Leavitt said he discussed the case with David Sturgill, the prosecutor who was assigned to the case 10 years ago and still works in the Utah County Attorney’s Office.
“He told me they dismissed it because the evidence was so outlandish,” Leavitt said.
But Leavitt’s statements about the dismissal don’t quite line up with what attorneys said in court.
“The allegations are some of the worst allegations of sexual abuse that I’ve come across in the many years that I’ve been prosecuting these types of cases,” Sturgill said during a hearing in May 2013.
During that same hearing, the defense attorney representing the man charged also discussed the seriousness of the case and the need for a thorough investigation.
“If Mr. […] is convicted of these charges, he will never see the light of day,” said Michael Esplin. “I mean, these are – he’ll be there for the rest of his life in prison.”
During a hearing in March 2014, Sturgill moved to dismiss the charges, with a plan to possibly refile the case in the future.
Neither attorney shared concerns during the hearing that the allegations were outlandish or unbelievable.Instead, they pointed to the several-years delay in reporting by the alleged victim, and difficulty in obtaining records.
“There’s a lot more that needs to be done with this case, and it’s just not coming together,” Sturgill said. “I’m getting resistance from DCFS… and then there’s other medical records that we’re having some trouble gathering. A lot of it’s due to just the age of this case. It’s an extremely delayed disclosure.”
Esplin sought – unsuccessfully – to have the case permanently dismissed, citing similar challenges that he believed would prevent his client from having a fair trial.
“Witnesses have passed away, records have been shredded, just because of the nature of the length of the time that’s gone on,” he said. “I don’t believe this case will ever be ready to be tried.”
Why the case was never refiled and what will happen with it now are questions that remain unanswered, but the sheriff says the current investigation has expanded beyond one case.
“We have new victims coming forward,” he said.
The man once charged in the case has recently filed to have the court records expunged. The Attorney General’s Office has filed an objection to the expungement request, saying, “The petitioner is currently the subject of an on-going criminal investigation by four law enforcement agencies into the same conduct which was the basis of the 1999 arrest.”
The Utah County Attorney’s Office has also filed an objection.
Smith has said the current investigation will continue, regardless of whether the 2012 case is expunged.

More than 1,200 people have applied to the newly reestablished Florida State Guard to fill 400 open positions – and one of its newest recruits is a former New York resident who said he moved to the lower-taxed and less regulated “free state of Florida.”
Gov. Ron DeSantis reestablished the state guard to lessen the burden of an understaffed and over-stretched Florida National Guard and to hire servicemen and women being forced out of the U.S. military over the federal vaccine mandate, he said.
Florida has one of the most understaffed National Guards nationwide, with the second worst resident-to-guardsman ratio. Its force of roughly 12,000 troops is currently a ratio of one guard member per 1,750 Floridians.
“The U.S. military has been kicking out great service members over the Biden administration’s unacceptable COVID vaccine mandate, and they are even targeting members of the National Guard,” DeSantis said. “The bureaucrats in D.C. who control our National Guard have also refused to increase the number of guardsmen despite our increasing population, leaving Florida with the second worst National Guardsman to resident ratio. By reestablishing the Florida State Guard under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Graham, we have a great opportunity to expand our capability to help people in times of need or disaster.”
Adjutant General of the Florida National Guard Jim Eifert said the Florida National Guard remains ready to help but has been stretched razor thin. Over the past 30 years, it’s responded to over 90 state emergency activations, totaling more than 1.5 million workdays. Nearly one-third of those days occurred in the last 2.5 years, he said.
Allocating more national guard slots to Florida “hasn’t been something Congress or the executive branch has been willing to do,” DeSantis said. “In the meantime, we saw an opportunity to say, ‘we don’t want to have military imposing some of this stuff with the vax, we understand there’s going to be more people out of work and we need more support … and the easiest way to expand [the National Guard] was to restart” the state guard, he said.
DeSantis tapped retired Marine Corps. Lieutenant Colonel Chris Graham to lead the state guard, building it from the ground up. Graham will act as the right-hand man of Eifert, who also serves as the commanding general of the Florida State Guard.
Graham said it was his goal that “every person in Florida who wants to help” applies to join the state guard.
One of his newest recruits is a former New York State Guard member and former New York resident who relocated to Florida, Paul Hansen.
Hansen said he moved to Florida for “many of the usual reasons. Sunshine, winter baseball and the opportunity to keep a little bit more of what I earn. It’s the governor’s leadership that for me was the deciding factor, not just on this issue but also on a lot of things we’ve seen over the past few years.”
Florida doesn't assess an income tax on workers in the state. New York assesses a graduated income tax rate of up to 8.82% depending on an individual's income.
Hansen joined the New York State Guard in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy and expressed his enthusiasm to using his skills in the “free state of Florida.”
“State guards are not unique,” he said, adding that nearly half of the states have them. “But it is a uniquely American institution that exists within the framework of our federal system.”
Florida joins 22 other states and territories who have state-level defense forces.
The state guard will be responsible to help Floridians during emergencies and natural disasters, especially during hurricane season. They can’t be deployed by the federal government or serve outside of the state, but will be armed like the Florida National Guard, DeSantis’ office said.
The legislature allocated $10 million to recruit and train 400 volunteers – but the response has been so great that more than three times the number of people needed for available slots have applied.
The $10 million is “just the beginning,” DeSantis said, adding that the legislature will likely be expanding the available state guard slots in the next legislative session.
