So his symptoms had recently worsened. Right around the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Wonder what the chances are that he was keeping some secrets about 9/11? Given his line of work? And her line of work too? Very sad.

This is a horrific story that is currently effecting the EOD community. A 30 year Navy EOD veteran killed his family, and then took his own life.

The part that I can’t get around is that his wife took him for a VA mental health evaluation the day before it happened. According to the story below, they were turned away without help. The tragedy occurred the next day.

Relatives of family found dead in San Carlos speak out

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The parents of a woman who was found shot to death alongside her husband and 13-year-old daughter in their San Carlos home say they had urged their daughter to seek help for her husband’s worsening mental health symptoms the day before the family was killed.

San Diego police identified the victims as 54-year-old Amy Voight; her husband, David Voight; and their 13-year-old daughter, Mya.

Amy’s parents, Mary and Jerry Austin, said Amy was a devoted mother and accomplished professional who had worked as a digital forensics analyst for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

“She was extremely bright and just the most amazing person,” Mary Austin said.

The Austins said David Voight was a highly decorated U.S. Navy warrant officer who served for about 30 years, including alongside Navy SEALs in explosive ordnance disposal and in war zones including Iraq and Afghanistan.

The couple said David suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and that his symptoms had recently worsened.

“You could visibly see there was something really wrong,” Mary Austin said. “He was fidgety. You could tell.”

The Austins said they encouraged Amy to take David to a Department of Veterans Affairs clinic for help. They said she did so Sept. 15, which was also her birthday, and spoke with a receptionist and a nurse.

According to Jerry Austin, Amy asked whether David could receive something to help with his anxiety, depression and frustration.

“She says, ‘Can you do anything to him to help him calm down? He’s frustrated, anxiety, depression,’” Austin said.

Austin said Amy was told the counselors were busy and that she needed to make an appointment.

The following day, Sept. 16, Amy, David and Mya were found shot to death inside their San Carlos home.

San Diego police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

“It’s terrible, and our pain is just starting,” Jerry Austin said.

Jerry Austin, a Navy veteran who also suffers from PTSD, said veterans experiencing mental health crises should have immediate access to help.

“My clinic that I go to is in Lancaster, California. It’s a small clinic. It is fantastic,” he said. “They greet you at the door. They take care of you. They are concerned about it.”

The Department of Veterans Affairs said it could not comment on the specific case because of privacy concerns.

“What’s being alleged regarding VA services is not accurate,” VA Press Secretary Quinn Slaven said in a statement. “All VA healthcare facilities offer same-day mental healthcare to all Veterans who request it.”

An amendment can’t be declared unconstitutional, by definition it’s in the constitution. I think the issue with this scenario is applying talking points from today to that time period. This was also when women gained the right to vote in many other countries worldwide so it’d be weird to go back on that, especially so soon after it got ratified

 

I think maybe the only way it’d happen is in the 30s or 40s after some sort of fascist coup that replaced the constitution entirely

Germany is the largest American military hub on the continent, with around 36,000 US troops. Italy hosts about 12,000 US troops and several major air bases. President Trump Signs Russian Sanctions Bill that Grants Him Massive Tariff Authority Over U.S. Imports from Countries Doing Business With Russia.

After a careful review of HR5334, the Lindsey Graham Russian Sanctions Bill [pdf HERE],I can certainly see why President Trump would happily sign it.

 

The bill has several elements that are immensely useful for President Trump, beginning with the fact that the baseline of the bill sits upon the cornerstone of current U.S. sanctions against Russia.This is a critical aspect to understand, because if you take away the originating Russian sanctions, HR5334 disappears.

 

Secondly, the bill grants President Trump the ability to place 100% tariffs on the top five trading partners of Russia, but the bill also grants wide latitude as to how those top five are determined. Top five oil, top five gas, top five financial, top five sector specific (energy, grain, oil, minerals etc.) the actual parameters or definitions of the “top five” are undetermined except by monetary value.

 

Some have just realized what this bill empowers. Others have yet to catch on. Additionally, The bill gives PresidentTrump the ability to impose tariffs of up to 100% within 30 days on all goods imported into the US from the five largest importers of Russian crude oil or gas as well as any countrythat knowingly made new purchases of oil or gas 30 days after the law was enacted or was among the top five countries helping Russia evade sanctions.

 

But there’s the key, again the authority is based on the pre-existing “sanctions.”So, who determines sanction relief?[interim, temporary, or strategic, in coordination with the policy objectives of the President]That would be U.S. Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent.

 

Remember the previous 30-day interim sanction relief that Bessent and Trump provided for Russian oil/gas “on the water’? In that scenario, the legislatively authorized tariff authority becomes entirely subject to the application determination of President Trump.Ex. give a 30-day waiver and suddenly oil/gas are no longer the largest monetary trade issues. Instead, it could be as simple as who buys the most Russian caviar; maybe it’s Italy or Spain, or even Canada. lol 😂

A judge ruled Friday that Tailei Qi is not guilty by reason of insanity in the death of UNC-Chapel Hill professor Zijie Yan, who was shot on campus in August 2023.

 

The man charged with killing a UNC-Chapel Hill professor in 2023 was found not guilty by reason of insanity Friday.

 

An Orange County judge ruled that Tailei Qi did not understand the wrongfulness of his actions when Zijie Yan, his academic adviser, was shot and killed on UNC's campus in August 2023.

 

The ruling came after a final hearing on Friday focused on Qi's mental state at the time of the shooting. Qi was then a doctoral student at UNC. Yan was an associate professor in the Department of Applied Physical Sciences.

 

Qi had previously been found competent to stand trial in March. That determination dealt with whether he was mentally capable of participating in court proceedings. Friday's hearing focused instead on whether he understood the wrongfulness of his actions when Yan was killed.

 

Two psychiatrists testified Friday after each spent more than a dozen hours evaluating Qi and reviewing his mental health history.

 

"He was not capable of understanding the inherent wrongfulness of his actions," Orange County District Attorney Jeff Nieman said. "To that end, in response, the judge found that he was not guilty by reason of insanity."

 

Qi had history of mental illness

 

The psychiatrists said Qi had at least 10 years of documented mental illness that likely began during his high school years and included recurring delusions and hallucinations.

 

They said some of Qi's hallucinations involved women, and one involved Yan. They also testified that Qi believed assassins were following him.

 

Dr. Nicole Wolf, a forensic psychiatrist, testified that Qi suffered from untreated schizophrenia and that his delusions affected his understanding of his actions in August 2023.

 

"Mr. Qi suffered from untreated schizophrenia — delusions — he did not appreciate the wrongfulness of his actions in August 2023," Wolf said.

 

Qi, who was 34 at the time of the shooting, previously attended Louisiana State University and Wuhan University.

 

In the weeks before the shooting, Yan had reached out to a colleague to express concern about a student who had told him about struggling with severe mental illness and delusions. Yan did not identify the student as Qi, according to testimony referenced during the hearing.

 

Two psychiatric evaluations, conducted in September and November 2023, concluded that Qi had severe mental illness, most likely schizophrenia or untreated psychosis. One evaluation also noted that he had injured himself while in the Orange County jail.

All of the datapoints on this event look sketchy. I’m not saying there was intentional foul play at work, but the appearance of foul play in combination with the obtuse descriptions therein, cannot be avoided.It just looks sketchy.

 

Exxon’s key refinery in Joliet, Illinois, produces gasoline and diesel fuel. The facility handles 275,000 barrels of crude per day, producing about 11 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel every day. {SOURCE}

 

The refinery operation has been offline for a week following a power disruption“found on ComEd’s primary and secondary power lines feeding into the Joliet refinery.” The company made the statement on Thursday, adding that power to the refinery was fully restored. However, with the power turned off floodwater overwhelmed a pumping station leading to flooding around the refinery which has compounded the outage.

 

The timing of this; the type of problem, together with the location (40 miles southwest of Chicago, Ill, near the intersection of Interstate 55 and the DesPlaines River) are aligned datapoints in a review of the consequence. Given the nature of geopolitics right now and the intention to politically weaponize the price of gasoline and diesel, everything just looks too coincidental.

 

NEW YORK, Sept 17 (Reuters) – Exxon Mobil said floodwater overwhelmed a pump at its 275,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Joliet, Illinois, according to a filing on Thursday. A containment boom had been deployed as part of the cleanup effort, the filing shows.

 

Exxon took the Joliet refinery offline on Sunday after a power outage triggered the facility’s safety flare.

 

The source of the outage was found on ComEd’s primary and secondary power lines feeding into the Joliet refinery, the company said in a statement on Thursday, adding that power to the refinery was fully restored.

 

The company declined to say whether the pump issue was linked to the power outage.

 

Industry monitor IIR Energy had expected return to normal service by the end of this week.

 

The refinery remains offline as of Thursday, according to Wood Mackenzie.

 

The refinery flared again on Wednesday, according to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, who posted about the incident on X.

 

The Joliet refinery is a key fuel supplier to the U.S. Midwest. According to the company’s website, it can produce about 11 million gallons per day of gasoline and diesel fuel.

 

The disruption comes amid a tight global fuel market, with the conflict in the Middle East and Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries putting pressure on fuel supplies.
