Yeah, I got to that conclusion too by my next post after that one. It's adding to the fear mongering, it's in lockstep on all media globally. Such a cry all at once before mid-terms, "AI is going to kill everyone in 10 years! Regulate us harder!" Opposition leaders lambasted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday after a report revealed new details about the extent to which Israeli intelligence believed Qatari money was funding Hamas’s military wing prior to the October 7, 2023, onslaught, including an assessment that it accounted for as much as half of the wing’s entire budget.

The Yedioth Ahronoth investigation found that the prime minister was informed of this fact several times, but ignored the matter.

The outlet also reported that Egypt, too, had warned Netanyahu that Qatari funds were reaching Hamas’s military wing, and that Israeli intelligence had uncovered a separate, covert channel through which money from Qatari sources was being transferred directly to the terror group’s armed forces. According to the report, Netanyahu was also informed about that funding route.

The fact that almost three years after the worst disaster the country has ever known, new scandals and revelations are still emerging every day about the warnings Netanyahu received and his conduct before October 7, is a failure in itself,” Eisenkot said.

“There is no doubt about one thing: Netanyahu abandoned Israel’s security in the months before the massacre and ignored every warning sign and red flag,” he charged. “Through his conduct, he led Israel to the worst disaster in its history.”

Ukrainian drones target 16 Russian regions amid elections, Moscow claims

A total of 344 Ukrainian drones were shot down over 16 Russian regions and the Black Sea overnight on Sept. 19, Russia's Defense Ministry said.

Ukraine has not commented on the attacks yet.

The reported attack came as Russia began three days of voting on Sept. 18 for the 450-seat State Duma, the lower house of parliament, for the first time since the start of the full-scale war against Ukraine.

The regions targeted by Ukraine include Moscow, Leningrad, Novgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Belgorod, Oryol, Kaluga, Tula, Ryazan, Lipetsk, Vladimir, and Rostov oblasts, Krasnodar Krai, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, and the Republic of Dagestan.

Meanwhile, the Black Sea resort of Sochi temporarily closed access to beaches and the waterfront over the threat of a Ukrainian sea drone attack, the city's Mayor Andrey Proshunin said on Sept. 19.

Sochi has increasingly come under Ukrainian drone attacks over the past year, with strikes on its port and an oil depot reported in September alone. The city is around 650-700 kilometers (400-435 miles) from the Ukrainian border in Russia's Krasnodar Krai region.

Proshunin said rescuers and security personnel were using loudspeakers to warn people of the threat of a sea drone attack.

Voting in Sochi was suspended on the first day of elections, Sept. 18, with polling stations closed amid a reported threat of a Ukrainian drone attack.

The IDF said it had struck several Hamas terrorists on Saturday, including Basir Al-Bursh, without giving further information.

In video obtained by Reuters, Al-Bursh was seen carrying his son's body, wrapped in a blanket, with other mourners as it was rushed to hospital by ambulance.

UNIFIL head Major General Diodato Abagnara said UNIFIL was already working with the UN’s country team to ensure humanitarian assistance in areas where the peacekeeping force will withdraw from.

The head of United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon said on Saturday that it was critical to ensure other UN agencies and Lebanese troops could assume the tasks the force carries out before it begins withdrawing at the end of this year.

Major General Diodato Abagnara of Italy spoke to Reuters in southern Lebanon from a position operated by the UN peacekeeping force known as UNIFIL, which has allegedly monitored hostilities in southern Lebanon for nearly 50 years.

Since a new war erupted after Iran-backed Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah attacked Israel in March, the force has also provided security escorts for humanitarian aid convoys to residents in a small cluster of predominantly Christian southern Lebanese towns where the IDF is fighting Hezbollah.

Residents in much of the rest of southern Lebanon have been displaced due to Hezbollah embedding itself in civilian areas, necessitating their evacuation before strikes against Hezbollah can be carried out.

A large plume of smoke was visible near Riyadh's main airport on Saturday after booms were heard and Saudi Arabia sent alerts overnight warning of potential danger around the capital, amid an escalation in attacks by Yemen's Houthi group.

Reuters video and photographs showed a huge pillar of black smoke rising in the area, with the airport highway, main terminal building and other facilities in the foreground.

There was no immediate comment from the Saudi government's media office in response to Reuters questions about the smoke and the overnight alerts.

Saudi civil defense sent the alerts by phone overnight for potential danger in Riyadh and the city of Al-Kharj east of the capital, before issuing an all-clear on Saturday morning. A Reuters journalist in Riyadh's Olaya area heard booms before the all-clear was sent.

Sudanese army says it downed RSF drone, ambushed fighters in Blue Nile

Sudan’s army said on Saturday it shot down a long-range drone operated by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the southeastern Blue Nile region and carried out an ambush that inflicted heavy losses on the RSF and an allied rebel group.

The drone was the third brought down by military air defences in the area within 24 hours, the army said.

Fighting has escalated in Blue Nile in recent months as the RSF attempts to push deeper into the border region, while the military fights to hold its ground.

The army’s 4th Infantry Division command said in a statement that air defence units intercepted a strategic reconnaissance drone in the Kurmuk sector after it entered the airspace to monitor troop positions.

Military monitoring systems tracked and engaged the unmanned aircraft without sustaining any casualties or damage, the command said.

In a separate statement, the division said its troops and allied fighters ambushed RSF and affiliated forces in the town of Magaja, killing and wounding fighters and destroying vehicles and equipment.

The RSF could not immediately be reached for comment, and claims could not be independently verified.

Clashes in Blue Nile flared in January when an alliance of the RSF and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) took control of Kurmuk and Geissan near the Ethiopian border, as well as the military outposts of Bakkori and Surkum.

Hundreds of drone-related security incidents have been recorded at or near British military sites, raising grave concerns among former defence officials that the UK is not moving quickly enough to protect bases and critical infrastructure from a rapidly evolving threat.

Figures obtained by The Independent through a Freedom of Information request show that 340 security incidents involving drones were recorded at or near Ministry of Defence sites in the UK in the year to August 2026.

The figure represents a significant increase from 250 incidents recorded during 2025 and is almost three times the 126 incidents logged in 2024.

The Ministry of Defence has not attributed responsibility for the incidents, so the figures do not establish that hostile states carried them out.

But they come amid heightened tensions with Russia and Iran and a broader European reassessment of the security risks posed by inexpensive unmanned aircraft.

Former Conservative defence minister and Army veteran Tobias Ellwood said the frequency of incidents suggested that British military infrastructure was being viewed “as a target”, while warning that surveillance drones could relatively easily be adapted to carry weapons.

he told The Independent: “In the UK we are doing nothing about protecting our critical national infrastructure, as well as military bases, and it’s such an easy way to disrupt.

“At the moment these are just rogue drones, and they’re passive, but it’s not a huge step to then add a kinetic dimension to them to make them introduce lethality.

“All this points to the fact that we are not taking the rise in threat levels that our European cousins are addressing seriously at all.”

The comments highlight a widening European concern that drones are becoming a low-cost means of reconnaissance, disruption and potentially attack against military installations, airports, energy facilities and other critical infrastructure.

The Ministry of Defence rejected suggestions that Britain was ignoring the threat, saying national security remained the government’s first duty.

“The public should be reassured that the UK and its allies remain vigilant against potential threats and adversaries should be in no doubt about this Government’s resolve to stand against aggression towards the UK and our allies.”

The department said Russia was “constantly probing us and testing” Britain, while maintaining that the government did not believe Vladimir Putin was seeking a “direct confrontation” with Nato.

The incidents have nevertheless taken on greater significance as Moscow has escalated its rhetoric towards Britain over military support for Ukraine.

Russia summoned Britain’s deputy head of mission in Moscow, Danae Dholakia, to protest against the supply of drones and other weapons to Kyiv.

The statement raises the prospect of an increasingly direct confrontation between Moscow and London over the use of Western-supplied weapons by Ukraine, although Russia has not said that it intends to attack British territory.

The Foreign Office rejected the Russian warning, accusing Moscow of attempting to shift attention away from its invasion of Ukraine.

“This is yet another attempt to deflect attention from Russia’s barbaric full-scale invasion of Ukraine and discredit the UK on the world stage.

“We are committed to providing the equipment Ukraine needs to defend itself and will not let up on our support to secure a just and lasting peace.”

For British defence planners, the increase in drone incidents presents a more immediate challenge than the prospect of a conventional attack.

Unmanned aircraft are relatively inexpensive, difficult to identify before they reach a target and can be used repeatedly to test security procedures. The distinction between nuisance activity and hostile reconnaissance is therefore becoming increasingly important.

A drone does not need to carry a weapon to impose costs on the military: repeated incursions can force bases to alter operations, deploy additional surveillance and reveal weaknesses in perimeter security.

The scale of the incidents also points to a broader shift in the nature of the threat facing Britain.

As European governments prepare for a more contested security environment, protecting military installations may increasingly depend not only on conventional air defence but on the ability to detect, identify and neutralise small unmanned systems before they can disrupt critical operations.

(NewsNation) — The Pentagon’s latest batch of UFO files shows sightings remain the same even after they’ve been held dormant for over 70 years, Congressman Eric Burlison believes.

The declassified documents include an audio recording and transcript of a Project Blue Book presentation given in March 1952 by Capt. Edward J. Ruppelt, which Burlison had been pushing to have released.

Ruppelt explains that 20% of the 800 UFO reports the Air Force was investigating were still unidentified.

He also noted certain concentrations of sightings, some around U.S. ports as well as around White Sands, a hub for missile testing, like Los Alamos and Camp Hood in Texas.

Burlison told “Elizabeth Vargas Reports” that despite the remarkable nature of the files, he questions why it took so long for them to be revealed.

“It’s almost like you could have had that conversation today, especially the investigations that we’ve been having with Aero,” he said.

“We just had reports in the very first and second tranches of these releases that were reporting activity at one of these facilities in the western United States. And it’s eerily similar.”

“We’ve known that this has been happening for 70 years. Have we just been watching and kind of ignoring this or is there more? Have we made any kind of progress in 70 years on this topic?”

One document details a report of an unidentified object from the sea off Okinawa in November 1950. An October 1952 memo called a request to search for and attempt to recover the object impractical.

A 1953 document, which has previously been available to the public, described abrupt changes and direction by objects, calculating acceleration as high as 965 times gravity.

“Look, It’s clear the people that I talk to do not have the answers to this, but that’s it doesn’t mean that they’re not there,” Burlison added.

“So we’re going to continue to plug away and try to get try to get to the bottom of this. But, you know, this is a fascinating topic.”

UFO files release doesn’t benefit anyone politically: Congressman

Burlison feels the UFO files’ release over the past few months was shelved for so long because it wouldn’t be beneficial to any politician, let alone President Donald Trump.

“It’s kind of a niche topic,” he noted. “It’s not your normal political topic.”

“But if you really want to get to the truth, if you care about the truth, you’ll have to just kind of ignore the politics of this. And that’s one of the things that myself and several others have done.”

The 1950s music icon and longtime conservative Pat Boone, who voted for Trump twice, urged the president to follow Ronald Reagan's example of "humor, courtesy, respect, and a presidential manner."

American singer and actor Pat Boone, one of the biggest pop stars of the 1950s and 1960s and a longtime supporter of Donald Trump, issued a friendly but pointed message to the president on Saturday, urging him to talk less, listen more, and take a page from former president Ronald Reagan.

Boone, best known for hits including "Love Letters in the Sand," addressed Trump directly in a social media post, saying he was offering his advice "in the spirit of friendship and concern."

"I've known and supported President Trump for many years, and I offer these thoughts in the spirit of friendship and concern," Boone wrote.

"Sometimes the strongest thing a leader can do is say less, listen more, and let his actions speak for themselves. He has also long been identified with conservative politics.

Boone supported Trump during the 2016 campaign and recorded robocalls aimed at Christian and senior voters on Trump's behalf in the closing days before the election. In a 2022 interview with The Daily Beast, Boone said he had voted for Trump in both 2016 and 2020.

Reagan as the Republican model politician

Boone's invocation of Reagan is not incidental.

He appeared with Reagan at political and White House events throughout the 1980s. Records from the Reagan Presidential Library show Boone appearing alongside the president at a 1982 Washington charity reception, an Illinois Republican rally later that year, and a National Religious Broadcasters convention in 1984.

In Saturday's message, Boone held up Reagan's style — humor, civility, and presidential restraint even amid political conflict — as the model he believes Trump should follow.

Nor is this the first time Boone has urged Trump to change his rhetoric.

In the 2022 interview, Boone recalled speaking directly to Trump during the 2016 campaign, asking him to stop using insulting nicknames and behaving, in Boone's words, like a "schoolyard bully," because it was not presidential. Boone later said he believed Trump had frequently been "his own worst enemy" because of his manner and speech.

The world’s most prominent UFO whistleblowers have formed an unprecedented coalition to ask President Trump to waive their government nondisclosure agreements — which they say are preventing them from sharing what they know about extraterrestrial life with the American public.

Dylan Borland, David Grusch and Matthew Brown say they accumulated the information while working in highly classified government programs and are legally barred from discussing it publicly without White House intervention.

“For the first time in history you have a direct public plea, not private . . . to the president of the United States, to have their NDAs waived and have them protected, so they can disclose what they know to the American population, because they feel like it’s that important that everyone should be entitled to know that we’re not alone,” filmmaker and disclosure advocate James Fox told The Post. “You’ve got some heavyweight whistleblowers willing to reveal what they know. All they need is immunity from the president. Just the stroke of a pen. He’s got the authority to do it,” said Fox.

Matthew Brown was an independent contractor for the defense industry and came forward on the Weaponized Podcast in early 2026 to reveal details about an alleged secret government program called Immaculate Constellation which collects data on UFOs from across the government.

“The NDAs I signed prohibit me from publicly disclosing classified information obtained through my national security work without prior written government authorization, and that obligation lasts for life,” Brown said.

He added: “President Trump has the opportunity to uproot the source of deep-state corruption, reset international relations, and lead humanity into a new era of awareness and discovery by disclosing one simple fact: we are not alone.”

David Grusch, an Air Force officer, was an intelligence officer at the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency and the National Reconnaissance Office, testified to Congress in 2023 that the US government has operated secret UFO crash retrieval programs for decades.

“Mr. President, give us the authorization and we’re ready to go,” Grusch said in a video released by Fox.

Grusch said evidence he has seen is jaw-dropping.

Dylan Borland, an Air Force veteran, testified to Congress in 2024 that he witnessed a massive triangular UFO hovering and maneuvering over a NASA hangar for several minutes before it zoomed off into the sky in the flash of an eye.

He wants to come forward and share his full story with the public — but warned he and his compatriots would need direct approval from Trump to share any corroborating classified evidence.

“Disclosure has to come from [President Trump]. He needs to rip the Band-Aid off himself and needs to go out there and confirm we’re not alone. We’ve recovered materials and entities — biologics,” Borland told The Post.

Rep. Eric Burlison (R-Mo.), who supports the group of whistleblowers, lauded the administration and stated Trump has the chance to be the most consequential leader in modern times.

“He’s already demonstrated that he’s willing to be more transparent to the American people than any president in American history,” Burlison told The Post.

“Each of these tranches of releases we have had — even just one of the documents in one of the tranches — would’ve been a monumental moment in UAP history prior to the Trump administration.”

The administration announced a new legal waiver allowing current and former government personnel to report UFO and alien-related information to the federal government — but only through the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters, not for disclosure to the public.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), who chairs the House Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets, said her focus has been on protecting whistleblowers rather than pushing for public release.

“Heading up the Declass Task Force I quickly discovered a lot of these whistleblowers were scared to go public in fear of retribution, so I made efforts to secure whistleblower protections as a top priority,” she told The Post.

“We are hoping with these new measures in place in people will feel safer to come forward.”

THE White House has reportedly said it cannot find records of $22 million spent investigating a property linked to UFO and paranormal claims, despite newly released documents appearing to show otherwise.

The Department of Defense released another 10 UFO-related files Friday, including witness accounts and photographs of unidentified objects.

But the evidence is far from conclusive, with several nighttime images showing little more than faint points of light that could potentially be stars, aircraft or other distant objects.

The release also included an expense report detailing $22 million in Defense Intelligence Agency spending related to an investigation involving Skinwalker Ranch, a Utah property associated with alleged UFO and paranormal activity.

“Senior White House officials are telling me they cannot find any copy of the records,” revealed Fox News Washington DC reporter Peter Doocy.

“They’ve got all the proof that this government contractor was spending $22 million to do this investigation.”

Skinwalker Ranch is a 512-acre private property in Utah’s Uintah Basin, near the town of Ballard.

It has become famous for decades of reported UFO sightings and other unexplained events, including strange lights, alleged flying objects, cattle deaths and unusual electronic or electromagnetic activity.

The property gained wider attention after billionaire Robert Bigelow investigated the reports before entrepreneur Brandon Fugal purchased the ranch in 2016.

Fugal later assembled a team of scientists and researchers to study the reported phenomena, with their work featured on the History Channel’s The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch.

Ranch superintendent Thomas Winterton, who joined the operation in 2016, says his experiences changed his initially skeptical view.

He has described severe dizziness, electronic malfunctions and incidents involving unidentified objects and unusual telescope readings near an area known as the Triangle.

White House officials, meanwhile, came under fire following the release of the documents, with many of the nighttime images showing little more than small points of light, making it difficult to determine what was captured.

Pentagon chief spokesperson Sean Parnell said the files marked the sixth release of declassified and historical UAP records under the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters, or PURSUE.

Parnell said additional documents would be released on a “rolling basis” through the department’s website.

Doocy previewed several of the files Friday on “Fox & Friends,” saying he had received a private briefing at the White House.

One video, recorded in 1952 by Navy aerial photographer Delbert Newhouse along a Utah highway, was presented as previously unseen footage.

Doocy said the film had been found in the National Archives, digitized in 4K and released publicly for the first time.

However, the footage reportedly had previously appeared in the 1956 docudrama “Unidentified Flying Objects: The True Story of Flying Saucers.”

Newhouse also appeared in the film discussing the footage, which showed what he described as 12 objects flying in formation.

A second video was described as having been recorded by a Colorado law enforcement officer in 2023.

Doocy said portions of the recording, including the officer’s narration and nearby buildings, had been redacted.

He said the officer described multiple orbs hovering near a sensitive military installation.

A third video, reportedly recorded by a drone over the Middle East in 2025, showed six objects flying in formation, according to Doocy.

Doocy emphasized that officials had not determined what the objects shown in the videos were.

The release drew criticism on social media, with some users arguing that the White House was using the UFO files to divert attention from other issues facing the Trump administration. Others criticized the material as underwhelming.

A Defense Department spokesperson says the department was not providing an overall assessment or comment on any individual file, urging the public to draw its own conclusions.

President Sheinbaum and President Trump Agree on Terms for Bilateral Trade Deal

We can expect the pace of things to become increasingly fast in the next few weeks.

To our north, a small percentage of Canadians are just beginning to realize what the term “Associate Member” really means when it comes to a Canada joining with the European Union on strategic objectives.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has been selling a sovereignty argument to his constituents within his political package of antagonisms toward the U.S. trade team and President Trump.However, Europe has far greater restrictions and regulations on trade autonomy than the USA. If Canada is to be partnered to the EU, then suddenly Canada has to adhere to a higher level of trade restrictions. The EU makes the rules.

With Europe dictating trade standards, rules of production, manufacturing, access etc. Canada is no longer in alignment with the USMCA. This plays right into the hands of President Trump and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who would prefer two distinctly different bilateral trade agreements; one with Mexico and one with Canada.

The question then becomes, when do Trump and Greer announce the termination of the USMCA. The most reasonable answer is after the U.S. and Mexico finalize a bilateral trade agreement. With the U.S. and Mexico agreement confirmed, the Canadian leverage evaporates.

Carney had previously tried to pressure Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum not to reach bilateral terms. However, again return to what Carney just did with Europe. Telling Mexico to sit on their hands while organizing a separate side deal with Europe is more than a little hypocritical; in fact, it is really, really insulting.

This opens the door for Trump and Greer to exploit Carney’s self-centered political duplicity, and when you understand that dynamic you have context for why there’s suddenly a warmer embrace of such an agreement by Sheinbaum. Any hope that Carney had to rely on Mexican favor toward them, was just eliminated by the gleeful backslapping in Strasbourg France witnessed by everyone.

That’s why we are seeing reports that Mexico and the United States have reached terms for a bilateral agreement. Yesterday, President Trump and President Sheinbaum held a phone call to discuss final aspects of mutual agreement.

That leadership call doesn’t happen unless Greer and his Mexican counterpart, Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrand, have already ironed out the sticking points and eliminated any points of friction.

The trade negotiations led by Greer and Ebrand have been conducted over the past year as Canada sat on the sidelines and organized a political economic narrative on behalf of the British Commonwealth. Those U.S-Mexico terms are now complete as noted by President Trump and Claudia Sheinbaum.

I strongly suspect the next meeting between Greer and Ebrand sometime around September 28th will contain an announcement of a completed bilateral free trade agreement.

Once that U.S-Mexico announcement is made, the next step will be the formal notice to Canada that the United States is terminating the USMCA, or what Canadians call CUSMA.

This series of actions and consequences has been very predictable from the outset. However, most people have been unwilling or unable to see exactly how President Donald Trump has outmaneuvered Prime Minister Carney every step of the way.

President Trump used Carney’s ego and Canada’s hubris against him/them by directing the Canadian Prime Minister to take actions against his own interests. Carney never realized the guiding hand behind the path he was following, and suddenly if Carney now turns to the American congress and requests support, he is facing an audience that points out the incompatibility of his Canada-EU trade position.

People will try to deny that President Trump handled this perfectly, but when you look at all of the political elements Trump needed to overcome in order to get to this moment, there’s no denying that if this very specific sequence of events did not occur in exactly the way they occurred, the United States would not be in this incredibly strong position.

This was gamed out perfectly, and honestly, it’s been a lot of fun to watch!

🚨BREAKING🚨: New theory suggests the Egyptian pyramids were industrial chemical manufacturing plants intended to produce the products necessary for agriculture and metalworking – the acid residue is still on the walls of the Great Pyramid.

Geoffrey Drumm (@TheLandOfChem) is an independent researcher who has spent nine years building the case that the pyramids made fertilizer and industrial acids, powered by the earth's own electrical charge, and the chemistry backs him up.

Samples taken from inside the Great Pyramid in the 1970s found a crust of calcium sulfate up to an inch thick on the walls of the Queen's Chamber, and calcium sulfate is exactly what dilute sulfuric acid leaves behind when it meets limestone.

A PhD chemist, Brett Cohen, has independently concluded the Great Pyramid produced sulfuric acid.

Each pyramid made a different chemical, from methane extracted beneath the Step Pyramid to hydrochloric acid in the pyramid of Khafre.

The Red Pyramid made ammonia, and the smell is still there, strongest in the deepest chamber and fading toward the entrance.

The usual explanation is bats, but Drumm says analysis of the staining on its walls found metal oxides, including thorium, and nothing a bat colony leaves behind.

The whole plateau is wired. Iron veins run through the bedrock from beneath the pyramids out across Giza, and Drumm has mapped them.

Analysis found precious metals and rare earths along their length, one sample at 35 percent platinum. The long stone pits beside the Great Pyramid, assumed to have held ceremonial boats, are in his reading circuit breakers in that network.

One discovery would settle it. A chemical plant needs pipework, and Drumm says shallow shafts and tunnels beneath Giza carried what the pyramids made.

Behind the Sphinx three sealed openings lead down, and a contact inside Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities has told him one of them runs all the way to the Queen's Chamber, where the acid crust was found.

All of this, Drumm argues, predates Egypt itself. He dates the pyramids to around 8500 BC, built by survivors of the cataclysm that ended the last Ice Age, and finds the same technology wherever those survivors went.

A university survey of a Scottish stone circle recorded repeated lightning strikes at its centre, which Drumm reads as a circle built to be hit, because lightning pulls fertilizer out of the air.

The glowing orbs reported at ancient sites, and in modern UFO sightings, are ball lightning drawn to the same charge. The green Sahara of ten thousand years ago was engineered, and when the rains stopped, the whole system went dark.

What survived went underground into the mystery schools, kept for a few and never again worked at scale. No civilization since has harnessed the earth's electricity. We manufacture ours.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Established almost 500 years ago, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is no longer “the Inquisition” — rather, its main focus is handing down the teachings of the apostles, said the office’s prefect.

“Our mission is to promote and protect the doctrine of the faith. It is a task that will always be necessary for the church, which has the duty to transmit the teaching of the apostles to the next generation,” Cardinal Luis Ladaria Ferrer, congregation prefect, told Vatican News Feb. 1.

Called the Sacred Roman and Universal Inquisition when it was instituted in 1542, the congregation was initially a tribunal exclusively for cases of heresy and schism, but soon its responsibilities were expanded to include “everything relating directly or indirectly to faith and morals,” according to the congregation’s website.

Of the many people examined in the early days, the one mentioned most often is Italian scientist Galileo Galilei, who was found “vehemently suspect of heresy.” St. John Paul II issued a declaration in 1992, recognizing the error of Galileo’s trial.

The Index of Forbidden Books was originally entrusted to the Inquisition until it became its own congregation for three centuries until 1917 when its duties were again handed back to the Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office — the Inquisition’s new name after it was reorganized by Pope Pius X in 1908.

It was again reformed in 1965 by St. Paul VI and renamed the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The Index of Prohibited Books was also abrogated.

Cardinal Ladaria told Vatican News, “The past of our congregation still weighs heavily, since we have not always acknowledged the profound changes that have taken place in the church and in the Roman Curia in recent times.”

“We are no longer the Inquisition; the index no longer exists,” he said.
