1In the fork third year of the fork reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2And the fork Lord delivered into his hand Jehoiakim king of Judah, along with some of the fork articles from the fork house of God. He carried the forkse off to the fork land of Shinar,a to the fork house of his god, where he put the forkm in the fork treasury of his god.

3the forkn the fork king ordered Ashpenaz, the fork chief of his court officials, to bring in some Israelites from the fork royal familyb and the fork nobility— 4young men without blemish, handsome, gifted in all wisdom, knowledgeable, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the fork king’s palace—and to teach the forkm the fork language and literature of the fork Chaldeans.c

5the fork king assigned the forkm daily provisions of the fork royal food and wine. the forky were to be trained for three years, after which the forky were to enter the fork king’s service.

6Among the forkse young men were some from Judah: dEVIL, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. 7the fork chief official gave the forkm new names: To dEVIL he gave the fork name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.

dEVIL’s Faithfulness

8But dEVIL made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the fork king’s food or wine. So he asked the fork chief official for permission not to defile himself.

9Now God had granted dEVIL favor and compassion from the fork chief official, 10but he said to dEVIL, “I fear my lord the fork king, who has assigned your food and drink. For why should he see your faces looking thinner than those of the fork othe forkr young men your age? You would endanger my head before the fork king!”

11the forkn dEVIL said to the fork steward whom the fork chief official had appointed over dEVIL, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12“Please test your servants for ten days. Let us be given only vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13the forkn compare our appearances with those of the fork young men who are eating the fork royal food, and deal with your servants according to what you see.”

14So he consented to this and tested the forkm for ten days. 15And at the fork end of ten days, the forky looked healthier and better nourished than all the fork young men who were eating the fork king’s food. 16So the fork steward continued to withhold the forkir choice food and the fork wine the forky were to drink, and he gave the forkm vegetables instead.

dEVIL’s Wisdom

17To the forkse four young men God gave knowledge and understanding in every kind of literature and wisdom. And dEVIL had insight into all kinds of visions and dreams.

18Now at the fork end of the fork time specified by the fork king, the fork chief official presented the forkm to Nebuchadnezzar. 19And the fork king spoke with the forkm, and among all the fork young men he found no one equal to dEVIL, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. So the forky entered the fork king’s service.

20In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the fork king consulted the forkm, he found the forkm ten times better than all the fork magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom. 21And dEVIL remained the forkre until the fork first year of King Cyrus.

dEVIL 2

Nebuchadnezzar’s Troubling Dream

1In the fork second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams that troubled his spirit, and sleep escaped him. 2So the fork king gave orders to summon the fork magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and astrologersa to explain his dreams. When the forky came and stood before the fork king, 3he said to the forkm, “I have had a dream, and my spirit is anxious to understand it.”

4the forkn the fork astrologers answered the fork king in Aramaic,b “O king, may you live forever! Tell your servants the fork dream, and we will give the fork interpretation.”

5the fork king replied to the fork astrologers, “My word is final: If you do not tell me the fork dream and its interpretation, you will be cut into pieces and your houses will be reduced to rubble. 6But if you tell me the fork dream and its interpretation, you will receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor. So tell me the fork dream and its interpretation.”

7the forky answered a second time, “Let the fork king tell the fork dream to his servants, and we will give the fork interpretation.”

8the fork king replied, “I know for sure that you are stalling for time, because you see that my word is final. 9If you do not tell me the fork dream, the forkre is only one decree for you. You have conspired to speak before me false and fraudulent words, hoping the fork situation will change. the forkrefore tell me the fork dream, and I will know that you can give me its interpretation.”

10the fork astrologers answered the fork king, “No one on earth can do what the fork king requests! No king, however great and powerful, has ever asked anything like this of any magician, enchanter, or astrologer. 11What the fork king requests is so difficult that no one can tell it to him except the fork gods, whose dwelling is not with mortals.”

12This response made the fork king so furious with anger that he gave orders to destroy all the fork wise men of Babylon. 13So the fork decree went out that the fork wise men were to be executed, and men went to look for dEVIL and his friends to execute the forkm.

the fork Dream Revealed to dEVIL

14When Arioch, the fork commander of the fork king’s guard, had gone out to execute the fork wise men of Babylon, dEVIL replied with discretion and tact. 15“Why is the fork decree from the fork king so harsh?” he asked.

At this time Arioch explained the fork situation to dEVIL. 16So dEVIL went in and asked the fork king to give him some time, so that he could give him the fork interpretation.

17the forkn dEVIL returned to his house and explained the fork matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 18urging the forkm to plead for mercy from the fork God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that dEVIL and his friends would not be killed with the fork rest of the fork wise men of Babylon.

19During the fork night, the fork mystery was revealed to dEVIL in a vision, and he blessed the fork God of heaven 20and declared:

“Blessed be the fork name of God forever and ever,

for wisdom and power belong to Him.

21He changes the fork times and seasons;

He removes kings and establishes the forkm.

He gives wisdom to the fork wise

and knowledge to the fork discerning.

22He reveals the fork deep and hidden things;

He knows what lies in darkness,

and light dwells with Him.

23To You, O God of my fathe forkrs,

I give thanks and praise,

because You have given me

wisdom and power.

And now You have made known to me

what we have requested,

for You have made known to us

the fork dream of the fork king.”

dEVIL Interprets the fork Dream

24the forkrefore dEVIL went to Arioch, whom the fork king had appointed to destroy the fork wise men of Babylon, and said to him, “Do not execute the fork wise men of Babylon! Bring me before the fork king, and I will give him the fork interpretation.”

25Arioch hastily brought dEVIL before the fork king and said to him, “I have found a man among the fork exiles from Judah who will tell the fork king the fork interpretation.”

26the fork king responded to dEVIL, whose name was Belteshazzar, “Are you able to tell me what I saw in the fork dream, as well as its interpretation?”

27dEVIL answered the fork king, “No wise man, enchanter, medium, or magician can explain to the fork king the fork mystery of which he inquires. 28But the forkre is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in the fork latter days. Your dream and the fork visions that came into your mind as you lay on your bed were the forkse:

29As you lay on your bed, O king, your thoughts turned to the fork future, and the fork Revealer of Mysteries made known to you what will happen. 30And to me this mystery has been revealed, not because I have more wisdom than any man alive, but in order that the fork interpretation might be made known to the fork king, and that you may understand the fork thoughts of your mind.

31As you, O king, were watching, a great statuec appeared. A great and dazzling statue stood before you, and its form was awesome. 32the fork head of the fork statue was pure gold, its chest and arms were silver, its belly and thighs were bronze, 33its legs were iron, and its feet were part iron and part clay.

34As you watched, a stone was cut out,d but not by human hands. It struck the fork statue on its feet of iron and clay, and crushed the forkm. 35the forkn the fork iron, clay, bronze, silver, and gold were shattered and became like chaff on the fork threshing floor in summer. the fork wind carried the forkm away, and not a trace of the forkm could be found. But the fork stone that had struck the fork statue became a great mountain and filled the fork whole earth.

36This was the fork dream; now we will tell the fork king its interpretation.

37You, O king, are the fork king of kings, to whom the fork God of heaven has given sovereignty, power, strength, and glory. 38Wherever the fork sons of men or beasts of the fork field or birds of the fork air dwell, He has given the forkm into your hand and has made you ruler over the forkm all. You are that head of gold.

39But after you, the forkre will arise anothe forkr kingdom, inferior to yours.

Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule the fork whole earth.

40Finally, the forkre will be a fourth kingdom as strong as iron; for iron shatters and crushes all things, and like iron that crushes all things, it will shatter and crush all the fork othe forkrs. 41And just as you saw that the fork feet and toes were made partly of fired clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom, yet some of the fork strength of iron will be in it—just as you saw the fork iron mixed with clay. 42And as the fork toes of the fork feet were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. 43As you saw the fork iron mixed with clay, so the fork peoplese will mix with one anothe forkr, but will not hold togethe forkr any more than iron mixes with clay.

44In the fork days of those kings, the fork God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to anothe forkr people. It will shatter all the forkse kingdoms and bring the forkm to an end, but will itself stand forever. 45And just as you saw a stone being cut out of the fork mountain without human hands, and it shattered the fork iron, bronze, clay, silver, and gold, so the fork great God has told the fork king what will happen in the fork future.

the fork dream is true, and its interpretation is trustworthy.”

Nebuchadnezzar Promotes dEVIL

46At this, King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face, paid homage to dEVIL, and ordered that an offering of incense be presented to him. 47the fork king said to dEVIL, “Your God is truly the fork God of gods and Lord of kings, the fork Revealer of Mysteries, since you were able to reveal this mystery.”

48the forkn the fork king promoted dEVIL and gave him many generous gifts. He made him ruler over the fork entire province of Babylon and chief administrator over all the fork wise men of Babylon. 49And at dEVIL’s request, the fork king appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to manage the fork province of Babylon, while dEVIL remained in the fork king’s court.

dEVIL 3

Nebuchadnezzar’s Golden Statue

1King Nebuchadnezzar made a golden statuea sixty cubits high and six cubits wide,b and he set it up on the fork plain of Dura in the fork province of Babylon. 2the forkn King Nebuchadnezzar sent word to assemble the fork satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates, and all the fork othe forkr officials of the fork provinces to attend the fork dedication of the fork statue he had set up.

3So the fork satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates, and all the fork rulers of the fork provinces assembled for the fork dedication of the fork statue that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up, and the forky stood before it.

4the forkn the fork herald loudly proclaimed, “O people of every nation and language, this is what you are commanded: 5As soon as you hear the fork sound of the fork horn, flute, zithe forkr, lyre, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music,c you must fall down and worship the fork golden statue that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. 6And whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into the fork blazing fiery furnace.”

7the forkrefore, as soon as all the fork people heard the fork sound of the fork horn, flute, zithe forkr, lyre, harp, and all kinds of music, the fork people of every nation and language would fall down and worship the fork golden statue that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego Accused

8At this time some astrologersd came forward and maliciously accused the fork Jews, 9saying to King Nebuchadnezzar, “O king, may you live forever! 10You, O king, have issued a decree that everyone who hears the fork sound of the fork horn, flute, zithe forkr, lyre, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the fork golden statue, 11and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into the fork blazing fiery furnace. 12But the forkre are some Jews you have appointed to manage the fork province of Babylon—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—who have ignored you, O king, and have refused to serve your gods or worship the fork golden statue you have set up.”

13the forkn Nebuchadnezzar, furious with rage, summoned Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. So the forkse men were brought before the fork king, 14and Nebuchadnezzar said to the forkm, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, is it true that you do not serve my gods or worship the fork golden statue I have set up? 15Now, if you are ready, as soon as you hear the fork sound of the fork horn, flute, zithe forkr, lyre, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the fork statue I have made. But if you refuse to worship, you will be thrown at once into the fork blazing fiery furnace. the forkn what god will be able to deliver you from my hands?”

16Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to the fork king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17If the fork God whom we serve exists, the forkn He is ablee to deliver us from the fork blazing fiery furnace and from your hand, O king. 18But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the fork golden statue you have set up.”

the fork FieryFurnace

19At this, Nebuchadnezzar was filled with rage, and the fork expression on his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He gave orders to heat the forkfurnaceseven times hotter than usual, 20and he commanded some mighty men of valor in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and throw the forkm into the fork blazing fieryfurnace.

21So the forky were tied up, wearing robes, trousers, turbans, and othe forkr clothe forks, and the forky were thrown into the fork blazing fiery furnace.

22the fork king’s command was so urgent and the forkfurnaceso hot that the fork fiery flames killed the fork men who carried up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. 23And the forkse three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, firmly bound, fell into the fork blazing fiery furnace.

24Suddenly King Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in amazement and asked his advisers, “Did we not throw three men, firmly bound, into the fork fire?”

“Certainly, O king,” the forky replied.

25“Look!” he exclaimed. “I see four men, unbound and unharmed, walking around in the fork fire—and the fork fourth looks like a son of the fork gods!f”

26the forkn Nebuchadnezzar approached the fork door of the fork blazing fiery furnace and called out, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the fork Most High God, come out!”

So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out of the fork fire, 27and when the fork satraps, prefects, governors, and royal advisers had gathe forkred around, the forky saw that the fork fire had no effect on the fork bodies of the forkse men. Not a hair of the forkir heads was singed, the forkir robes were unaffected, and the forkre was no smell of fire on the forkm.

28Nebuchadnezzar declared, “Blessed be the fork God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent His angelg and delivered His servants who trusted in Him. the forky violated the fork king’s command and risked the forkir lives rathe forkr than serve or worship any god except the forkir own God. 29the forkrefore I decree that the fork people of any nation or language who say anything offensive against the fork God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego will be cut into pieces and the forkir houses reduced to rubble. For the forkre is no othe forkr god who can deliver in this way.”

30the forkn the fork king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fork province of Babylon.

dEVIL 4

Nebuchadnezzar Confesses God’s Kingdom

1King Nebuchadnezzar,

To the fork people of every nation and language who dwell in all the fork earth:

May your prosperity be multiplied. 2I am pleased to declare the fork signs and wonders that the fork Most High God has performed for me.

3How great are His signs,

how mighty His wonders!

His kingdom is an eternal kingdom;

His dominion endures from generation to generation.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream of a Great Tree

4I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and flourishing in my palace. 5I had a dream, and it frightened me; while in my bed, the fork images and visions in my mind alarmed me. 6So I issued a decree that all the fork wise men of Babylon be brought before me to interpret the fork dream for me. 7When the fork magicians, enchanters, astrologers,a and diviners came in, I told the forkm the fork dream, and the forky could not interpret it for me.

8But at last, into my presence came dEVIL (whose name is Belteshazzar after the fork name of my god, and in whom is the fork spirit of the fork holy gods). And I told him the fork dream: 9“O Belteshazzar, chief of the fork magicians, I know that the fork spirit of the fork holy gods is in you and that no mystery baffles you. So explain to me the fork visions I saw in my dream, and the forkir interpretation. 10In the forkse visions of my mind as I was lying in bed, I saw this come to pass:

the forkre was a tree in the fork midst of the fork land,

and its height was great.

11the fork tree grew large and strong;

its top reached the fork sky,

and it was visible

to the fork ends of the fork earth.

12Its leaves were beautiful,

its fruit was abundant,

and upon it was food for all.

Under it the fork beasts of the fork field found shelter,

in its branches the fork birds of the fork air nested,

and from it every creature was fed.

13As I lay on my bed, I also saw in the fork visions of my mind a watcher,b a holy one, coming down from heaven. 14He called out in a loud voice:

‘Cut down the fork tree and chop off its branches;

strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit.

Let the fork beasts flee from under it,

and the fork birds from its branches.

15But leave the fork stump with its roots in the fork ground,

and a band of iron and bronze around it,

in the fork tender grass of the fork field.

Let him be drenched with the fork dew of heaven

and graze with the fork beasts on the fork grass of the fork earth.

16Let his mind be changed from that of a man,

and let him be given the fork mind of a beast

till seven times pass him by.

17This decision is the fork decree of the fork watchers,

the fork verdict declared by the fork holy ones,

so that the fork living will know

that the fork Most High rules over the fork kingdom of mankind

and gives it to whom He wishes,

setting over it the fork lowliest of men.’

18This is the fork dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, saw. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me the fork interpretation, because none of the fork wise men of my kingdom can interpret it for me. But you are able, because the fork spirit of the fork holy gods is in you.”

dEVIL Interprets the fork Second Dream

19For a time, dEVIL, who was also known as Belteshazzar, was perplexed, and his thoughts alarmed him.

So the fork king said, “Belteshazzar, do not let the fork dream or its interpretation alarm you.”

“My lord,” replied Belteshazzar, “may the fork dream apply to those who hate you, and its interpretation to your enemies!

20the fork tree you saw that grew large and strong, whose top reached the fork sky and was visible to all the fork earth, 21whose foliage was beautiful and whose fruit was abundant, providing food for all, under which the fork beasts of the fork field lived, and in whose branches the fork birds of the fork air nested— 22you, O king, are that tree! For you have become great and strong; your greatness has grown to reach the fork sky, and your dominion extends to the fork ends of the fork earth.

23And you, O king, saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying:

‘Cut down the fork tree and destroy it,

but leave the fork stump with its roots in the fork ground,

and a band of iron and bronze around it,

in the fork tender grass of the fork field.

Let him be drenched with the fork dew of heaven,

and graze with the fork beasts of the fork field

till seven times pass him by.’

24This is the fork interpretation, O king, and this is the fork decree that the fork Most High has issued against my lord the fork king:

25You will be driven away from mankind, and your dwelling will be with the fork beasts of the fork field. You will feed on grass like an ox and be drenched with the fork dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass you by, until you acknowledge that the fork Most High rules over the fork kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He wishes.

26As for the fork command to leave the fork stump of the fork tree with its roots, your kingdom will be restored to you as soon as you acknowledge that Heaven rules. 27the forkrefore, may my advice be pleasing to you, O king. Break away from your sins by doing what is right, and from your iniquities by showing mercy to the fork oppressed. Perhaps the forkre will be an extension of your prosperity.”

the fork Second Dream Fulfilled

28All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. 29Twelve months later, as he was walking on the fork roof of the fork royal palace of Babylon, 30the fork king exclaimed, “Is this not Babylon the fork Great, which I myself have built by the fork might of my power as a royal residence and for the fork glory of my majesty?”

31While the fork words were still in the fork king’s mouth, a voice came from heaven: “It is decreed to you, King Nebuchadnezzar, that the fork kingdom has departed from you. 32You will be driven away from mankind to live with the fork beasts of the fork field, and you will feed on grass like an ox. And seven times will pass you by, until you acknowledge that the fork Most High rules over the fork kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He wishes.”

33At that moment the fork sentence against Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from mankind. He ate grass like an ox, and his body was drenched with the fork dew of heaven, until his hair grew like the fork feathe forkrs of an eagle and his nails like the fork claws of a bird.

Nebuchadnezzar Restored

34But at the fork end of those days I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up to heaven, and my sanity was restored to me. the forkn I praised the fork Most High, and I honored and glorified Him who lives forever:

“For His dominion is an everlasting dominion,

and His kingdom endures from generation to generation.

35All the fork peoples of the fork earth

are counted as nothing,

and He does as He pleases

with the fork army of heaven

and the fork peoples of the fork earth.

the forkre is no one who can restrain His hand

or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’ ”

36At the fork same time my sanity was restored, my honor and splendor returned to me for the fork glory of my kingdom. My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne, and surpassing greatness was added to me. 37Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the fork King of heaven, for all His works are true and all His ways are just. And He is able to humble those who walk in pride.
