Bills passed are sent to the governor, who then has until Oct. 14 to sign or veto the measures. Here's a look at some of the proposals the Legislature has sent him.

 

Labor

AB 1 - Allows legislative staff to unionize.

 

SB 799 - Allows workers on strike for at least two weeks to have access to unemployment benefits.

 

SB 525 - Raises minimum wage for healthcare workers to $25 an hour over the next few years.

 

AB 1228 - Raises minimum wage for fast food workers to $20 an hour by April of 2024.

 

Public Safety

SB 14 - Classifies child sex trafficking as a serious felony to increase prison time for repeat offenders.

 

AB 701 - Enhances prison time and penalties for high-level, illegal fentanyl dealers carrying at least a kilo of the drug.

 

SB 2 - Sets new limits for concealed carry firearms in response to the U.S. Supreme Court's Bruen decision.

 

Gender, race, and ethnicity

AB 1078 - Prevents California public school systems from banning books on gender and race.

 

AB 957 - Requires judges in California to consider a parent's affirmation of their child's gender identity in child custody disputes.

 

AB 5 - Establishes the Safe and Supportive Schools Act, establishing required training for public school staff and teachers on supporting LGBTQ students.

 

SB 403 - Prohibits caste discrimination.

 

Housing

AB 12 - Prohibits landlords from requiring a security deposit greater than one month's rent.

 

SB 423 - Fast tracks the construction of affordable housing.

 

SB 4 - Allows religious institutions, including churches, synagogues and nonprofit colleges, to build affordable housing on their property.

 

Miscellaneous

SB 58 - Legalizes the personal use of some natural psychedelic drugs, including magic mushrooms.

 

SB 253 - Requires large companies doing business in California to disclose their carbon emissions.

 

SB 261 - Requires large companies doing business in California to disclose their climate risk.

 

SJR 7 - Calls for a U.S. Constitutional convention to add an amendment on gun control. This requires 33 other states to do the same in order to launch the next phase.

 

Measures for the 2024 Ballot

ACA 1 - Asks voters to make it easier for local governments to increase taxes for affordable housing and infrastructure projects by lowering the voter threshold for approval. If passed through the Legislature, it still needs voter approval to become law.

 

ACA 13 - Asks voters to requires ballot initiatives that attempt to raise the voter threshold to pass a law to also pass by that same threshold it wants voters to approve.

 

SB 326/AB 531- Asks voters to approve changes to the Mental Health Services Act, which would become the Behavioral Health Services Act that would require most of the funds collected through an existing 1% tax on millionaires to be used on housing those who are severely mentally ill and homeless. It also asks voters to approve a $6 billion bond to help fund the effort.

Mark McInerney will become the US space agency's director of research into unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs), more commonly known as unidentified flying objects.

 

NASA officials initially refused to reveal McInerney's identity amid fears he would be harassed, before later backtracking on the decision.

 

Speaking about the new UFO boss following the release of the agency's highly-anticipated study into more than 800 UAP sightings, NASA's associate administrator Nicola Fox told reporters: 'They have been working there a while now, during the study, to help be a point of contact.'

 

But when directly asked whether she could name the official, Fox replied: 'We will not give his name out.'

 

All changed hours later, however, when NASA sent out a press release that included McInerney's name and revealed he previously worked as the agency's liaison to the Pentagon.

 

There has been no explanation as to why McInerney's identity was revealed when NASA initially declined to do so.

 

However, it emerged at last night's briefing that several members of the independent study group had received threats, hate mail and been ridiculed on social media.

 

Some were even apparently told to stay away from researching UFOs because it could damage their scientific credibility.

The newly-formed UFO research division will continue studying UAPs, even though the space agency yesterday ruled out that aliens were to blame for some 800 such sightings over almost three decades.

 

These are defined as objects 'that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena from a scientific perspective'.

 

In a landmark report commissioned by NASA last year and published on Thursday, an independent panel of 16 experts stressed that there was 'no reason to conclude' that any of the sightings they analysed were extraterrestrial in origin.

 

However, the team did warn that mysterious flying objects were a 'self-evident' threat to American airspace.

 

Even though they poured cold water on the extraterrestrial hypothesis, NASA's experts did not deny the possibility of a 'potential unknown alien technology operating in Earth's atmosphere.'

 

Their 33-page report called for NASA to utilise its technological might to continue studying UFOs because many cases remain unsolved — and researchers still have no idea what some of these sightings are.

 

NASA chief Bill Nelson announced that a new director for UFO research would help implement the panel's recommendations.

 

Following a news briefing setting out the findings, he said: 'I want to thank the independent study team for providing insight on how NASA can better study and analyse UAP in the future.

 

'NASA's new Director of UAP Research will develop and oversee the implementation of NASA's scientific vision for UAP research, including using NASA's expertise to work with other agencies to analyse UAP and applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to search the skies for anomalies.

 

'NASA will do this work transparently for the benefit of humanity.'

The panel noted that, to date, most UAPs are recorded with sensors and other equipment intended for nonscientific purposes, under accidental or 'serendipitous' circumstances that are far from ideal.

 

Evidence from nearly all UFO cases, in other words, was not collected with enough scientific rigour for experts to reach reliable conclusions in the panel's view.

 

'Coupled with incomplete data archiving and curation,' the NASA panel wrote, 'this means that the origin of numerous UAP [UFOs] remain uncertain.'

 

They concluded that in their scientific view, the bar for proof of extraterrestrial visitors to our planet must be kept high.

 

'In the search for life beyond Earth, extraterrestrial life itself must be the hypothesis of last resort,' the panel wrote, 'the answer we turn to only after ruling out all other possibilities.'

 

'As Sherlock Holmes said, "Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth".'

 

Back in May, NASA's independent study team shared their preliminary observations — that up to 98 per cent of reported UAP sightings can be explained away.

 

Just 2 to 5 percent are considered 'possibly really anomalous', the panel added, but a lack of high-quality data is hampering researchers' ability to apply 'rigorous scientific scrutiny' to the mystery-solving.

 

NASA's study is separate from the Pentagon's investigation into UAPs, which saw US lawmakers hear first-hand accounts of UFO sightings from former members of the military earlier this year.

 

That Pentagon study, led by the Defense Department's new All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) and directed by Pentagon physicist Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick, has received 350 reports of UFOs in the past two years.

 

Almost half, or precisely 171 of those UFO cases, remain unexplained.

 

Although their is cross-collaboration, the US space agency's panel is focused on the civilian, unclassified side of this effort, while AARO leads the charge on examining UAPs in coordination with the intelligence and military communities.

'I am horrified': Archaeologists are fuming over ancient human relative remains sent to edge of space

For the first time, fossilized remains of ancient human relatives have gone to the edge of outer space — and scientists are not happy about it.

 

Fragmentary remains of two ancient human relatives, Australopithecus sediba and Homo naledi, were carried aboard a Virgin Galactic flight on Sept. 8. Departing from Spaceport America in New Mexico, the fossils, carried by South African-born billionaire Timothy Nash in a cigar-shaped tube, were rocketed to the edge of space.

 

The fossils were chosen by Lee Berger, a National Geographic Society explorer in residence and the director of the Centre for the Exploration of the Deep Human Journey at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, who was instrumental in the discovery of both species. A fragment of the collarbone of 2 million-year-old A. sediba, first discovered by Berger's son Matthew in 2008, was chosen for the trip, as well as a thumb bone from H. naledi, the still-mysterious 300,000-year-old hominin found in the Rising Star cave in 2013 by a group of researchers Berger dubbed "Underground Astronauts."

 

Lee Berger did not reply to a request for comment by the time of publication, but in a statement, he noted that "the journey of these fossils into space represents humankind's appreciation of the contribution of all of humanity's ancestors and our ancient relatives," while Matthew Berger speculated that these hominins "never could have dreamed while alive of taking such an incredible journey as ambassadors of all of humankind's ancestors."

 

The fact that these ancient species would not have understood their journey into the upper atmosphere is one of many reasons anthropologists and others have critiqued the space flight.

 

In a thread on X (formerly Twitter), Alessio Veneziano, a biological anthropologist and co-organizer of the AHEAD conference (Advances in Human Evolution, Adaptation and Diversity), succinctly identified four main issues that have been discussed: 1) the lack of scientific justification for the flight; 2) ethical issues surrounding respect for human ancestral remains; 3) Berger's access to the fossils, which few other researchers share; and 4) the misrepresentation of the practice of palaeoanthropology.

 

The fossils' space journey has been roundly criticized for lacking a scientific purpose, especially since a malfunction on the mission could have destroyed the priceless specimens. Berger's original permit request, which was ultimately approved by the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA), mentioned that the goal of the journey was to promote science and bring global recognition to human origins research in South Africa rather than to address any scientific questions.

 

The effects of spaceflight on heritage items "hasn't been an area of scientific study," Justin Walsh, a professor of art and archaeology at Chapman University in California, told Live Science in an email. "Space archaeologists like me are definitely interested in the effect of the space environment on items in space," he said, "but I don't think we'd use a piece of heritage from here on Earth as a test article to see what happens to it."

 

"I am horrified that they were granted a permit," Sonia Zakrzewski, a bioarchaeologist at the University of Southampton in the U.K., wrote in an X thread, noting she would use it as an example in her class about unethical approaches. "This is NOT science."

That documentation is a key aspect of Berger's permit request, in which he justified the selection of the fossils — and mitigated the risk of their loss — because they have been "extensively studied" and "published many times." But there are few fossil hominin casts other than Homo naledi available for study and public viewing, often owing to a lack of financial and material resources in the countries in which they are found. On top of that, the final major critique of the fossils' space journey is the entitlement and privilege revealed by the flight.

 

The fossils were carried aboard Virgin Galactic by Nash, whose father John made his fortune in aviation. Nash was one of the first people to buy a ticket on the second commercial flight of Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic space plane. Nash has also been friends with Lee Berger for over a decade and owns most of the so-called Cradle of Humankind — including the land where the Bergers discovered A. sediba, which he hopes to develop into a "paleotourism" industry.

 

While most paleoanthropological researchers do not have the access to land and fossils afforded to Berger, the problem remains, in the eyes of many, that Berger has misrepresented what these researchers actually do.

 

"This is an unusual activity for ancient fossils," Walsh said, with "no sign that Berger was interested in performing science and answering that question [on the effects of spaceflight] by flying the fossils." Instead, in keeping with standard scientific practice, Walsh would have liked an open dialogue about the mission, including more information about the risks and benefits, prior to the flight.

 

"We should ask: Can the University of the Witwatersrand and Lee Berger be trusted to care for these fossils going forward, if this is what they think is an appropriate thing to do with them?" Walsh said.

Las Vegas family release bizarre drawings of UFOs they claim landed in backyard

A Las Vegas family has broken its silence to double down on claims that UFOs landed in the backyard – as they showed off drawings that they made of the apparent alien sightings.

 

The Kenmore family, who went viral earlier this year after calling 911 to report that two ten-foot aliens had landed in their backyard, spoke out for the first time in an interview with Inside Edition.

 

“I believe I saw something that wasn’t from Earth,” youngest son Joshua said.

 

The family members created drawings of what they claimed to have seen as they also revealed that they saw a black Chevrolet Suburban with “government plates on it” soon after the extraterrestrial encounter.

 

The family remained anonymous for months out of fear of being ridiculed but said that, since their UFO visit, strangers have flocked to their house to see where the aliens landed – with some even climbing over the fence.

 

The family’s lawyer Sam Heidari, who was hired to sue any trespassers, told Inside Edition the Kenmore’s “didn’t want that publicity”.

 

“The only thing they did was report it to the police,” he said.

 

Mr Heidari said he believes that the Kenmores believe what they saw was real.

 

The family released drawings of the supposed UFOs in an effort to try to further substantiate their claims.

 

One of the sons Bobby drew a figure with glowing, antennae-like ears and a mouth full of gnashing teeth. He said the being didn’t appear to have a nose.

 

Meanwhile, eldest son Angel coloured in his alien with gray pencil, noting that he was trying to keep the colour accurate to what he had seen.

 

He told Inside Edition the alien had a ball of light beside it and stood with one leg bent.

 

Describing the apparent encounter on the evening of 1 May, , Angel said that he and his brother heard something falling from the sky before they then observed a flash of light.

 

The brothers said that they then felt the impact of something hitting the ground and heard a loud bang.

 

The two teenagers were then hit with a shockwave, they claimed, which they likened to an “out of body experience”.

 

Angel claimed he then tried to look at the fallen object but the whole backyard was blurry, and he heard “thousands of footsteps” all around him before the blurriness subsided.

 

The teen said he could make out a tall, very thin creature standing between eight and 10 feet tall. Panicking, he called Bobby to the backyard, who told him to go inside.

 

Angel said the creature had “weird-looking feet and a big face and eyes” and “a big mouth”.

 

“I could hear his loud deep breathing and see his stomach move,” he said.

 

The teenager went back inside and called the police.

 

“There’s like a eight foot person… and it has big eyes and it’s looking at us,” he said to the operator in the now-viral 911 call. “I swear to God, it’s not a joke.”

 

That same night, a police officer’s bodycam captured a greenish light blazing through the sky.

 

An officer repsonding to the family’s home told them: “I’m not gonna BS you guys. One of my partners said they saw something fall out of the sky too.”

 

Angel said an officer walked with the family to the backyard and pointed at a perfect circle that had been etched into the ground.

 

Angel’s story was further corroborated by footage from a neighbour’s Ring camera, which captured a whooshing sound and an enormous bang.

 

Angel previously spoke out bout his experience in a video posted to YouTube in June.

 

“This is not a conspiracy theory. I am not making this story up for clout or fame,” he said in the video, which has had just under a million views.

One of the more common memes that I’ve seen white supremacists spread around recently has been “diversity is a code word for white genocide”. The concept here is that diversity is only promoted in white nations, and that the end goal is to eliminate white people altogether by flooding all white countries with non-white people until there are no white people left. Well, guess what, white supremacists? That’s exactly right. Diversity IS about getting rid of white people, and that’s a good thing.

First off, I am a white person myself, so allow me to get that out of the way. I’m extremely glad that the white race is dying, and you should be too. White people do not have a right to exist. Period. That may sound like a bold statement, but it’s entirely true. Any white person with even the faintest knowledge of history should curse themselves every single day for being white. Throughout all of recorded history, whites have engaged in oppression, genocide, colonialism, imperialism, and just plain evil on a massive scale. White people have denied every other race the right to exist, and have – at some point in history – oppressed every single race on the planet.

Why, then, should whites now be allowed to live in peace when whites have historically been the world’s #1 source of conflict and oppression? Whiteness is racism. Period. Whiteness is the source of all oppression in the world. Whiteness is racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and heteropatriarchal capitalism. Eliminate whiteness and you eliminate every single form of oppression that the world currently faces. No white people means no oppression. White people are like a cancer and oppression is a symptom of the cancer. Cut out the cancer altogether – with the cancer being white people – and you get rid of all of the oppression which white people cause.

I have dedicated my life to fighting racism, and I have determined – based on all available evidence – that the only way to really eliminate racism is to eliminate whiteness. Whiteness is the ocean from which racism flows. Get rid of whiteness and you get rid of racism. Despite what white supremacists often claim, white people do not have a “culture”. White “culture” consists of nothing more than oppression, genocide, and the disenfranchisement of minorities. White “culture” is racism and nothing more. When white supremacists talk about “white culture”, what they’re really talking about is racism. Over the course of history, white people have built a massive empire based entirely on the hard work of oppressed and disenfranchised minority groups. But guess what, white people? That empire is finally coming to an end now, and its demise is music to my hears. To quote the great anti-racist activist Tim Wise: “Do you hear it? The sound of your empire dying? Your nation, as you knew it, ending, permanently? Because I do, and the sound of its demise is beautiful.”

Descendants of Holocaust survivors can personally attest to the evil that white people are capable of when they hold the reins of power. Thankfully, whites won’t be holding the reins of power for much longer. When white people die out, so will racism, sexism, queerphobia, and all other forms of oppression. The only way to eliminate racism, white privilege, and white supremacy is to eliminate whiteness altogether. When I teach my students about human rights, critical race theory, and the role of whites in worldwide oppression, my white students often ask me how they can “atone” for the evils of whiteness and how they can make up for centuries of white oppression. Thankfully, white birthrates are indeed very low, while the birthrates of minorities are much, MUCH higher. Within our lifetimes, whites will be a minority in a significant number of formerly white countries, including the US, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, to name just a few. To white supremacists yearning for the days when whites could rape and pillage the world with impunity, this is incredibly frightening. To people on the right side of history, however, this looks like progress. Whites are finally getting their just desserts – and it’s about time. I sincerely hope that, when the white power structure finally comes crashing down, whites will receive no mercy from the minority groups that whites have spent centuries oppressing. We certainly don’t deserve any mercy or kindness, as we have given nothing of the sort to others.

Whites should also know that, when they do become a minority in formerly white countries, they will NOT be receiving affirmative action or any of the other benefits meant to assist the minorities that whites have historically oppressed. Why? Because whites don’t deserve those benefits. It’s as simple as that. One can look to South Africa, where whites are only about 8.4% of the population, but blacks continue to receive affirmative action because blacks in South Africa have historically been disenfranchised by whites. The same thing will happen when whites become a minority in North America, Europe, and Oceania, because whites have historically oppressed minorities in all three of those continents. Not to mention, why should whites receive any kind of benefits when the ultimate goal is to get rid of whites altogether? Finally, laws against hate speech will serve to prevent whites from complaining about this, as any white person who complains will be arrested, given a long prison sentence, and made an example of for the rest of the remaining white population. Speech that attempts to justify the white power structure and perpetuate white oppression of minorities is not freedom of speech, and it has absolutely no place in modern society.

As white people, we all need to recognize that we no longer have a place in the world. This world now belongs to the minorities that us whites have spent centuries oppressing, and there is absolutely nothing that any pathetic white supremacists can do about it. In order for a better world to be created, white people need to be exterminated. Period. It’s as simple as that. We should simply be thankful that our death will be accomplished through mass immigration and declining birthrates. When whites have exterminated other races, it wasn’t nearly so peaceful – it was done through violent genocide. But other races are not as evil as whites are, and it’s important to remember that. The world belongs to minorities now, and they will make a much better, more peaceful world with what they’re given. Only when white people have ceased to exist will a peaceful and progressive society – free of racism and hatred – be possible. The only way to eliminate white privilege, white oppression, white racism, and the oppressive white power structure is to eliminate white people altogether.

So, yes, white supremacists: diversity is indeed white genocide. And white genocide is exactly what the world needs more than anything else.

He said he hired his own private security but added that he later found out that the leader of the Oath Keepers, Stewart Rhodes, “would assign someone to us.” CNN previously reported that

Rhodes’ Oath Keepers protected Jones at multiple “Stop the Steal” rallies and that some were tasked with providing a personal security detail for Jones and Alexander on January 6.

 

“I had 12 to 14 security people,” Jones said, elaborating that he hired a “well-known private security company” based out of Texas that provided him with personnel composed of “DC and Maryland police.”

 

“I go and try to get professional people,” Jones added, joking that they were probably Democrats.

 

Jones did say that everywhere he went, people “of every different type” followed him around.

 

He revealed that he had eaten at a Hooters restaurant with some members of the Proud Boys after attending a rally in Georgia prior to January 6.

 

Jones, referring to the indictment of Rhodes on seditious conspiracy charges, said that if the Oath Keepers were attempting to foment a violent rebellion, it’s not something he knew about or desired.

 

The committee acknowledged specifically in its subpoena to Jones that once at the Capitol, he had told people “not to be violent” and to gather and wait for Trump to speak.

Even though Trump never went to the Capitol that day, the committee said the location where Jones had told people to wait “coincided” with the place that

“Stop the Steal” rally organizer Alexander had obtained a permit for that day.

 

On his show, Jones said he had tried to discourage people from entering the Capitol but described containing the crowd as “mission impossible.”

 

“We learned there were a bunch of people inside the Capitol,” Jones said. “And that was so stupid and so dumb. I didn’t support it that day and I don’t support it now.”

 

“We got the hell out of there once we couldn’t stop it,” Jones later added, calling January 6 a “horrible historic fiasco” and saying he wished it had “never happened.”

A wealthy Trump donor who helped finance the rally in Washington on Jan. 6 also gave $150,000 to the nonprofit arm of the Republican Attorneys General Association, records show, funds that a person familiar with the contribution said were intended in part to promote the rally.

The nonprofit organization paid for a robocall touting a march that afternoon to the U.S. Capitol to “call on Congress to stop the steal.”

 

On Dec. 29, Julie Jenkins Fancelli, daughter of the founder of the Publix grocery store chain, gave the previously undisclosed contribution to RAGA’s nonprofit Rule of Law Defense Fund, or RLDF,

records reviewed by The Washington Post show. On the same day, the records show that Fancelli gave $300,000 to Women for America First, the “Stop the Steal” group that obtained a permit for

the rally featuring former president Donald Trump.

 

Funding for the events in Washington that day is a focus of the House select committee investigating the violent riot at the U.S. Capitol that followed the rally.

The panel is also interested in the role state officials, including attorneys general, played in encouraging people to go to Washington on Jan. 6 and in supporting Trump’s efforts to overturn the election,

according to people familiar with the committee’s work.

 

The leaders of Women for America First have been subpoenaed by the committee, as has Caroline Wren, a Republican fundraiser who was listed on that group’s permit as a “VIP ADVISOR.”

Both of Fancelli’s donations were arranged by Wren, according to the records and the person with knowledge of the contributions, who like some others interviewed for this story spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

 

“We have many questions about coordination and funding, and we are actively seeking records and testimony that will answer those questions,” said committee spokesman Tim Mulvey.

“Many witnesses are already engaging with the committee, and we expect cooperation to help us get the answers we’re seeking.”

 

The documents sought by the subpoenas sent to rally organizers were due Wednesday.

 

Fancelli, who is not involved in Publix business operations, did not respond to multiple requests seeking comment, and it is unclear if she knew about the robocall ahead of time.

In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, which reported in January that Fancelli had given approximately $300,000 to support the rally,

she said: “I am a proud conservative and have real concerns associated with election integrity, yet I would never support any violence, particularly the tragic and horrific events that unfolded on January 6th.”

 

Alex Jones, a far-right talk show host and conspiracy theorist who was involved in the Jan. 6 rally, has said that it cost “close to half a million dollars.”

He has also said a donor he did not identify paid for 80 percent of the rally.

 

In a statement to The Post, Wren’s lawyer said: “Ms. Wren, in her role as an event planner, assisted many others in providing and arranging for a professionally produced and

completely peaceful event at the White House Ellipse with hundreds of thousands of Americans who were in D.C. to lawfully exercise their first amendment rights, a primary pillar of American democracy.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Wednesday confirmed the fifth person infected, a 24-year-old health-care worker. An infected 9-year-old remains on ventilation, government media said.

 

n a statement on social media, Pinarayi Vijayan, chief minister of Kerala, told residents not to panic but to "face this situation with caution" and "fully cooperate with the restrictions" to contain the disease. Kerala has seen four outbreaks of Nipah since 2018, the last of which occurred in 2021, as the state was also fighting a wave of covid-19 cases.

 

The World Health Organization estimates the Nipah virus's fatality rate to be between 40 and 75 percent and has listed it as a priority disease because of its epidemic potential. The strain identified in Kerala, known as the Bangladesh strain, has a high mortality but is less infectious, Indian media reported.

What is Nipah virus and how does it spread?

 

Nipah virus (NiV) was discovered during an outbreak among pig farmers in Malaysia in 1999. The workers are thought to have contracted the virus through infected livestock and their secretions.

 

Fruit bats, which are also known as "flying foxes," are the natural host of the Nipah virus, according to the WHO. The virus can be transmitted from animals to humans - primarily from bats or pigs - or through human-to-human contact.

 

The fruit bats, from the Pteropodidae family, often live in date trees near markets, and the virus has spread from bats to humans through food items - such as fruit and raw date palm juice - that were contaminated by infected bats.

 

Domestic animals, including horses, cats and dogs, are also able to catch and spread the infection, but the virus is considered highly contagious among pigs, which can pass the virus on to humans who come into contact with their bodily fluids or tissue.

 

The deadly infection can also be transmitted through close human contact; the virus can spread from an infected individual to their family or caregivers through the person's bodily fluids.

 

In 2018, India grappled with an outbreak in Kerala that killed 21 of 23 people infected. In 2019, a new case was recorded in the country, but swift action and widespread contact tracing prevented further spread. A 12-year-old boy in Kerala died in September 2021 after contracting the virus and showing symptoms of brain swelling and inflammation of the heart, Indian media reported.

What are the symptoms of Nipah virus?

 

Symptoms of the disease are wide-ranging. Milder symptoms include fever and headaches, vomiting, sore throat and muscle aches.

 

In severe cases, patients can experience acute infections such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and respiratory issues. Other reported side effects include seizures, which may lead to personality changes or a coma.

 

Some who contract the virus remain asymptomatic.

How widespread is Nipah virus?

 

In the decades since it was first detected, outbreaks have been recorded in many Southeast Asian countries, including Singapore, Bangladesh and India.

 

In some parts of Asia, new cases of the Nipah virus have been recorded"almost annually,"according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A NASA astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts will launch to space later today (Sept. 15), and you can watch live.

 

NASA astronaut Loral O'Hara, alongside Russian counterparts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub, will launch aboard a Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station. Launch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. EDT (1530 GMT or 8:30 p.m. local time at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.)

 

You can watch the launch live here at Space.com, courtesy of NASA Television. Coverage starts about 45 minutes before launch. The crew will then make one of the fastest-ever trips to the ISS, potentially arriving as soon as 2:56 p.m. EDT (1856 GMT). We will also carry that coverage live, from NASA. Hatch opening will follow around 4:45 p.m. EDT (2045 GMT) as the Soyuz astronauts join the Expedition 69 crew already on station.

 

The trio will launch aboard the MS-24 spacecraft as a relief crew for NASA astronaut Frank Rubio and Roscosmos' Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitry Petelin. Rubio and his colleagues were already scheduled for a six-month mission, which was delayed to a year following a leak in their own Soyuz spacecraft (MS-22) in December 2022.

 

The agencies eventually decided to rapidly send up an empty replacement vehicle, MS-23, which safely arrived in February. But prior to the leak, MS-23 was supposed to hold O'Hara and her relief crew, who were still in training at the time of its faster-than-expected launch. For Rubio and his crewmates, coming home required an even longer wait until the new MS-24 and O'Hara's crew would be ready this month to relieve them.

 

In the meantime, Rubio, Prokopyev and Petelin unintentionally set records. At an expected 371 days in space (assuming a Sept. 27 landing), they are the first crew to spend more than a year on the ISS. And only four people have spent longer in space than that, all cosmonauts who visited the Soviet-era Mir space station for as long as 427 days.

 

NASA has emphasized the importance of having backup vehicles in case of emergencies like this. The agency had a backup plan to bring Rubio home in an already docked SpaceX Dragon vehicle (putting Rubio in a temporary seat installed below four seats already occupied by other astronauts); Rubio's Russian crewmates would have taken the broken Soyuz, as two humans would not heat up the spacecraft as rapidly as three. But that scenario was not required after MS-23 arrived.

 

NASA and the Russians regularly exchange astronauts to fly on each other's vehicles; O'Hara's was part of a set of four announced in mid-2022.

WASHINGTON – With the nation’s auto workers threatening to walk off the job at midnight Thursday, the Biden administration is preparing to offer emergency economic aid to auto suppliers to protect them from any long-term damage in the event of a prolonged strike, according to published reports.

 

The Washington Post, citing anonymous sources aware of internal conversations, said Biden aides are worried that a protracted strike could wipe out thousands of suppliers that depend on businesses from three key automakers, Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, formerly Fiat Chrysler.

 

The paper said it was not clear what aid might be offered, but that one option would be for the Labor Department to provide grants to help workers at firms affected by the strike. Another could be for the Small Business Administration to provide favorable loans to these firms.

 

Reuters also reported that an emergency aid package was under consideration.

 

The White House and the United Auto Workers declined to comment.

The UAW, which represents around 146,000 workers, and Detroit’s Big Three automakers have been unable to reach an agreement on a new contract, raising the possibility of the first simultaneous strike against the three car manufacturers in the union's 80-year history.

 

The UAW is demanding an immediate 20% raise for workers, followed by another four raises at 5% each. Altogether, hourly pay would increase by 46% spanning the four-year contract. Workers are also asking for a shift back to pensions, reinstated cost-of-living adjustments, a 32-hour workweek and elimination of compensation tiers, among other things.

 

The two sides have until 11:59 p.m. Eastern on Thursday before the contract expires. While it’s possible that all UAW members could walk off the job, the union has said it will begin by striking at a limited number of plants.

 

A strike could deal a serious blow to the U.S. economy, which is still feeling the strains from the coronavirus pandemic. An analysis by the Anderson Economic Group consulting firm suggested a 10-day strike could result in a total economic loss of more than $5 billion.

 

A strike also could test President Joe Biden’s claim that he is the most pro-union president in history.

 

Biden spoke Thursday with UAW President Shawn Fain and leaders of the major auto companies to discuss the status of the ongoing negotiations, the White House said.

 

The White House would not say whether Biden would intervene in the event of a strike but stressed that he has encouraged the parties to stay at the table and work around the clock to get an agreement.

 

“The president believes in collective bargaining, has encouraged sides to continue to have that conversation, to continue to be at the table,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Wednesday. “And that’s what the president is going to continue to do.”

A neo-Nazi group in Florida says the right-wing hysteria about drag performances has been an effective recruitment tool.

 

“What we have seen is certain types of activism definitely gets interest and recruitment up. And that’s where like the drag queen shit — like everybody wants to be a part of the team shutting that down,” Josh Nunes, leader of National Socialist Florida, recently told NPR.

 

The NPR report describes the group laser-projecting an image of a swastika and a cross onto a high-rise building in Jacksonville, along with messages such as one to Florida’s governor reading, “Why are child friendly drag shows legal? @ Ron DeSantis.” Actually, DeSantis has been a proponent of restricting drag shows, but National Socialist Florida is trying to push him even farther.

 

While the far right has gotten riled up over school curricula about racial and LGBTQ+ issues, the anti-drag rhetoric has been the most effective, Nunes said. “We’ve just seen the largest upticks in recruitment from the drag stuff,” he noted.

 

Just a few people turned out to protest drag shows when the group first became active last year, but “it’s not uncommon to show up with 20 dudes now,” he said. “We’re hoping by the end of this year maybe we got 30 or 40 guys.”

So I posted this last night, looks like fox picked up on it(vidrel t/s 01:49), still do not think that it's a Beretta px-4, because of the screw in the front of the lower, and the fact the gun Hunter is holding, has a recurved trigger guard and my Px-4, along with every one I have found online have a round trigger guard.
