Kremlin comments on Navalny’s death

With an investigation ongoing, Dmitry Peskov cautioned Western leaders against making “rabid statements”

Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) is taking all the necessary steps to investigate the death of Alexey Navalny, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.

Navalny died on Friday afternoon in a penal colony in Yamalo-Nenets Region, where he had been serving a 19-year sentence for offenses related to “extremism.” According to the prison service, the 47-year-old felt unwell and lost consciousness after a walk, and was pronounced dead by doctors shortly after.

The FSIN “is taking all the steps that need to be taken in such a situation,” Peskov told reporters. As such, a special inquiry would not be needed, he added.

The Kremlin spokesman said that medical professionals will determine the exact cause of Navalny’s passing, and that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been kept informed of the situation.

Earlier, an RT Russian service source said that Navalny had suffered a blood clot.

US Vice President Kamala Harris declared that “Russia is responsible” for Navalny’s passing, while European Council President Charles Michel said that “the EU holds the Russian regime solely responsible for this tragic death.”

“Obviously, these are absolutely rabid statements,” Peskov commented. “There is no information about the cause of death. We consider such statements absolutely unacceptable and inappropriate.”

Navalny first rose to prominence as a right-wing activist and as one of the leaders of the “Russian march,” an ultranationalist rally formerly held in Moscow every year He then shifted his ideology to align with Western liberal beliefs and positioned himself as an opponent of Putin, attempting to contest the 2018 presidential election despite being investigated for fraud at the time.

Navalny was convicted of fraud and jailed in early 2021, receiving an additional 19 years for extremism last year. In December, he was transferred to the ‘Polar Wolf’ colony in Russia's Yamalo-Nenets Region, located 40km above the Arctic Circle.

Biden aide responds to Putin endorsement

White House representative John Kirby did not appreciate the Russian president’s preference for the incumbent in the forthcoming US elections

Russia should stay away from the US elections altogether, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters at the White House. Kirby was speaking after Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the qualities of his US counterpart Joe Biden, during an interview with a Russian journalist on Wednesday.

Putin said he would prefer if Biden won the November election, as he is more experienced and predictable.

“I think Mr. Biden – no, I’m sorry, I think Mr. Putin knows very well what this administration has been doing to counter Russia’s malign influencearound the world and certainly what they’ve been doing inside Ukraine,” Kirby said at the White House on Thursday, in response to a question about the Russian leader’s apparent endorsement.

“Mr. Putin should just stay out of our elections,” Kirby added.

The retired US Navy admiral has previously worked for the State Department and the Pentagon, before coming to the White House as the spokesman for Biden’s National Security Council. He often briefs reporters on foreign policy matters, leaving domestic politics to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

Putin seemed to endorse Biden in a sit-down with Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin in Moscow. When asked about the impending US elections, he said it would be inappropriate for Russia to meddle in what was an internal American matter. When Zarubin asked whether he would prefer to see Biden or his rival Donald Trump in the White House, however, Putin answered directly.

“Biden. He is a more experienced and predictable person, he is a politician of the old sort. But we will work with any leader who gets the confidence of the American people,” he said.

Putin even made excuses for Biden’s alleged cognitive impairments, saying he didn’t see any sign of this when they met in Geneva in mid-2021.

Biden, 81, has declined to take the cognitive test as part of his annual medical examination. Earlier this week, a special prosecutor investigating his illegal retention of classified documents from when he was Barack Obama’s vice-president described Biden as an “elderly man with a poor memory,” unlikely to be convicted by a Washington, DC jury.

(Does he really want Bidan to run because Obama is trying to get rid of him?)
