Assange's lawyers have argued today that the CIA plotted to kill Julian Assange, and that he cannot be safely extradited to a country that planned his kidnapping/ assassintion.

Fresh evidence shows options were presented directly to President Trump over killing Assange after Vault-7 leaks.

(Defense for Assange is establising that entire US government was/is hostile to Assange and cannot therefore guarantee a safe trial. They are appealing the scope of previous findings ruled on by the court)

Defense has raised point that document U.S. is relying on for extradition contains clause forbidding extradition of political prisoners. Argues U.S. cannot simultaneously want to extradite because of political embarrassment while ignoring that section of the treaty.

Also raised was fact that Wikileaks was not the first or only outlet to recieve said classified documents from Manning, but the prosecution has been selective (targeting Assange) with no explanation for this behavior.

(note* for posterity. This is not entirely correct as the charges actually revolve around an unidentified WL rep offering to help Manning obtain more But there is no way for positive identification of Assange possible as that rep. so it is a nonsequitor, legally speaking.)

For every 800 injections administered, Rancourt and his colleagues concluded in their 180-page paper that one vaccine-related death occurs.

This 1-in-800 number becomes even more alarming when you consider how many doses were given.

At the time of Rancourt and colleagues’ report, 13.5 billion COVID-19 injections were administered.

Divide that number by 800, and you end up with approximately 17 million COVID-19 vaccine-related deaths.

"License To Play God": Physician Group Files Brief Against Biden In COVID

The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) filed an amicus brief against the Biden administration in a Supreme Court case, criticizing the government’s online censorship of COVID-19 information.

The lawsuit, Murthy v. Missouri, alleges that the administration engaged in coercing social media platforms to suppress COVID-19 content.

The American Medical Association (AMA) and other groups filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court supporting the Biden administration.

In its brief, AMA and its allies said that the federal government had a “compelling interest” in the case. They justified censorship by arguing that “combatting vaccine misinformation is, at its simplest, the government trying to prevent factually incorrect statements from costing people their lives.”

The AAPS filed its brief on Feb. 7, slamming AMA’s position.

“Our national motto is not ‘In Vaccines We Trust’, or even ‘In Government We Trust.’ The right to criticize vaccines and government mandates of vaccines should not be abridged” as sought after by the AMA and “other allies of the Biden Administration,” the brief said.

“Freedom to criticize is an essential safeguard against tyranny, and a First Amendment right … It is alarming that any professional organization would argue for censorship as the AMA Amici do in this case.”

The AMA amicus brief is supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Physicians, and the American Geriatrics Society.

“The argument by the AMA Amici to declare a compelling interest in vaccination such that censorship of it would be allowed should be firmly rejected here,” AAPS said in its brief. For more than 50 years, there have not been any new categories of unprotected speech, it said.

“Criticism of vaccination is warranted in response to the exaggerations of benefits of vaccination and the denial of its proven harms, as illustrated by the AMA Amici brief here.

“A sharp decline in the prevalence of diseases cited by the AMA Amici began before the relevant vaccine became commonly used, thereby disproving the asserted cause-and-effect.”

The AMA brief also fails to reference the “immense harm” caused by several novel or contaminated vaccines, like the first polio shots, AAPS stated.

Allowing the federal government to censor vaccine criticism will open the doorway to “an unaccountable license to play God in tinkering with human biology.”

AAPS warned that by seeking to censor criticism of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine, the AMA brief signers “implicitly seek censorship of criticism of anything that may be called a vaccine in the future under yet another redefinition of that term.”…

Ukraine’s AI Drones Seek And Attack Russian Forces Without Human Oversight

Ukrainian developers have confirmed that their drones are now carrying out autonomous strikes on Russian forces without a human operator. This is the first time such drones are known to have been used, as UN allegations about autonomous attacks in Libya in 2020 remain unproven.

The Saker Scout drones can find, identify and attack 64 different types of Russian ‘military objects’ on their own, operating in areas where radio jamming blocks communication and prevents other drones from working.

The quadcopter Saker Scout, came into service last month and can carry three kilos of bombs to a range of around 12 kilometres. Small drones operated by remote control have proved extremely effective as bombers with modified RKG-3 anti-tank grenades or RPG warheads and can destroy even heavy tanks.

AI In The Service Of Ukraine

The Saker company was founded in 2021 to develop affordable AI for small business, with applications as drone-based vision systems crop protection. When Russia invaded, the company switched to assisting the military. One of the first requirements was an AI to help a drone operator spot vehicles concealed by vegetation or camouflage.

Saker’s system is based on machine learning and the developers say it can currently recognize 64 different types of ‘military object’ including tanks, personnel carriers and other hardware. It is continuously improved and is updated on demand when there is a requirement to detect a specific new object or vehicle type. An early Saker video shows the system identifying light and heavy armor (personnel carriers and tanks) and trucks as it flies over them.

Saker AI software is also capable of visual navigation using known landmarks on the ground, so a drone can find its way even if GPS is jammed.

The Saker Scout is integrated with Ukraine’s Delta intelligence distribution system which fuses data from drones, satellites and other sources to produce a complete map of the battlefield. A Saker Scout can reconnoiter an area on its own and bring back information. Rather than just raw video, the software highlights enemy vehicles, so a the drones map out enemy positions which would otherwise take hundreds of hours of analysis by humans – not practical when you are fighting a war in real time.

The aim is to enable an extremely fast reconnaissance-decision making-strike process (also known as the ‘kill chain’) in a way that is not possible when humans are involved. Saker suggest that a kill-chain moving at machine-speed, with minimal human involvement, could be transformational in defeating Russian forces.

The Saker Scout can act as a hunter for FPV ('First Person View') attack drone teams: the AI acts as an observer pointing out targets, and automatically passes details to FPV attack drone operators who will verify a target before striking it.

Autonomous Attack Drone

The most radical use of the Saker Scout is to carry out attacks without a human in the loop, finding and hitting targets autonomously. A company spokesman confirmed to me that the Saker Scout had already been used in this mode, but only on a small scale. Most likely it is only used autonomously when radio interference or jamming prevents direct operator control. A video from Saker shows one of their drones carrying out a bombing mission. It is not known if this was autonomous.

The spokesman noted that the AI is not perfect, but their priority was getting a useful system that saves lives into the field. As mentioned, Saker are in constant contact with users and the system is updated continuously.

Going forward, if the system is deemed to be sufficiently reliable, large numbers of autonomous attack drones could be deployed simultaneously without the need for trained operators, or limited radio bandwidth. Dozens of bomber drones could attack simultaneously, immune to jamming and anti-drone guns, possibly targeting jammers or other defenses to make way for operator-controlled drones.

Many campaigners have sought to ban this type of ‘killer robot’, but Paul Scharre, Director of Studies at the think tank Centre for a New American Security, told me that despite UN discussions going back as far as 2014, there is still no international agreement.

If adopted, AMA’s proposal would allow the government to censor presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose book “The Real Anthony Fauci” could also be banned by the administration, AAPS added.

The Epoch Times reached out to the White House and AMA for comment.

Under President Joe Biden, the federal government is alleged to have engaged in censorship of COVID-19 vaccine-related discussions online.

In February 2022, then-White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that the administration wanted “every platform to continue doing more” in calling out what the government deemed to be “COVID-19 misinformation.”

Facebook Faces Pressure

Last year, it was revealed that Facebook complied with requests from White House staff to throttle the reach of a 2021 video by Tucker Carlson that discussed COVID-19 vaccines.

Facebook was also pressured to censor content suggesting that COVID-19 could have been man-made, according to certain emails released last year.

In a message from July 2021, Nick Clegg, Facebook’s head of global affairs, asked colleagues why Facebook was “removing—rather than demoting/labeling—claims that Covid is man-made?”

An employee responded:“Because we were under pressure from the administration and others to do more.”

Earlier this month, newly disclosed emails showed that Biden administration officials pressured Amazon to censor some COVID-19 books.

In another amicus brief filed in the Murthy v. Missouri lawsuit, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) told the U.S. Supreme Court that “getting the correct answer in this case is extraordinarily important given the interconnected mosaic of First Amendment issues the Court is considering this Term.”

“A common thread running through these cases is whether the government actors may evade constitutional review by strategically claiming they are doing something other than speech regulation. The Court should not let them get away with it.”

The Biden administration is also facing another free speech lawsuit filed in December by the state of Texas and conservative media outlets The Federalist and The Daily Wire.

The lawsuit accuses the State Department, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and several officials from the department’s Global Engagement Center of intervening in the news media market by creating blacklists of outlets deemed to be spreading “disinformation.”

“These entities generate blacklists of ostensibly risky or unreliable American news outlets for the purpose of discrediting the disfavored press and redirecting money and audiences to news organizations that publish favored viewpoints,” the complaint said.

“The pace of technology far outstrips the pace of diplomacy,” says Scharre. “After years of little to no progress in the consensus-based Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW), humanitarian disarmament activists pushing for a ban on autonomous weapons are taking their case to the UN General Assembly in late October. Scharre notes the underlying technology has been around some time, so many others may have comparable systems. Other companies produce drone AI software claimed to be better at spotting targets than a human operator. In January Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s Minister for Digital Transformation and lead on the Army of Drones initiative, stated in an interview with AP that autonomous weapons were a “logical and inevitable” next step in drone development, suggesting a quiet but deliberate policy. On October 6th Fedorov announced in an official statement that some 2,000 AI-enabled drones had just been supplied via Army of Drones.

"They will assist in safely carrying out reconnaissance, adjusting artillery fire, and uncovering even well-concealed Russian objectives thanks to AI," Fedorov stated. He did not say whether these drones were also capable of autonomous attack. If not, this capability is only a software update away.

The concern in the past has always been that bad actors would develop this type of technology. However, the moral argument becomes more complex when it is being deployed in an existential fight for Ukraine’s survival against a brutal invasion. As with cluster bombs, Ukraine may be less concerned with possible long-term effects and more concerned about winning the war. But such weapons will not be confined to Ukraine for long.

“Operational pressures are likely to push both sides in the direction of autonomous weapons,” says Scharre.

Scharre notes that while they may initially be limited to military targets like tanks and radar, autonomous weapons could soon be used for less discriminate approaches such as targeting personnel.

Afghan forces blocked from UK resettlement – BBC

The move could reportedly prevent witnesses of alleged UK wrongdoing in Afghanistan from giving evidence

British special forces have intervened to reject applications by elite Afghan troops to resettle in the UK, despite evidence that they fought alongside them in operations against the Taliban, a report by the BBC has claimed.

There are concerns among UK special forces that Afghans could be asked to provide evidence in an inquiry into alleged wrongdoing by UK forces during the Afghanistan war, the outlet reported, citing an anonymous source.

The allegation, which came as part of a report by the BBC’s Panorama program on Monday, alleges thatBritish special forces were effectively given veto power over Afghan relocation applications, leading to concerns that hundreds of veterans face an uncertain future and possible reprisals from the Taliban.

The UK Armed Forces minister, James Heappey, told parliament earlier this month that a review of around 2,000 applications would be conducted, after acknowledging that the initial process was “not robust.” A Ministry of Defence (MoD) review would come alongside a public inquiry into alleged wrongdoing by UK special forces in Afghanistan, sparking concerns of a possible conflict of interest.

“At a time when certain actions by UK special forces are under investigation by a public inquiry, their headquarters also had the power to prevent Afghan special forces colleagues and potential witnesses to these actions from getting safely to the UK,” an anonymous former British special forces member told the BBC.

It has been claimed that 80 civilians were illegally killed by British special forces in Helmand province between 2010 and 2013. Afghan military personnel situated in the UK could theoretically be asked to provide evidence on their conduct in the ongoing inquiry.

Afghan units who accompanied British special forces in “meaningful roles” during operations in the war in Afghanistan are eligible to apply for UK resettlement under the Afghan Relocation and Assistance Policy (ARAP) scheme.

However, citing leaked documents, the BBC said that “hundreds” have had their applications rejected. The outlet also noted that “dozens” of Afghan troops have been tortured or killed by the Taliban since the group seized power in August 2021.

Another former soldier added to the BBC: “At best it’s not appropriate, at worst it looks like they’re trying to cover their tracks.”

The public inquiry will hear evidence on Tuesday from former British army officer and current UK Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Johnny Mercer, who is expected to state that war crimes allegations against UK troops are credible.

Previously, the inquiry had heard allegations of Afghan civilians being fatally shot in their sleep during raids in 2011 and 2012 as part of a broader policy of “executing Afghan males of a fighting age” even if they posed no immediate danger.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said it is conducting a “case-by-case review” of Afghan relocation applications, adding that it will “consider all available evidence” while doing so.

Elon Musk has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize as a 'stout proponent for free speech', joining conservationists, journalists, religious leaders and political activists in an exclusive group of the world's foremost actors for change.

Marius Nilsen, MP for Norway's libertarian Progress Party, claimed to have put forward the X owner and Tesla founder for his 'adamant defense of dialogue, free speech and [enabling] the possibility to express one's views' in a 'continuously more polarized world'.

Nilsen also credited Musk's satellite internet constellation Starlink, operated by SpaceX, in his decision, noting its use in Ukraine for resistance fighters to 'communicate, coordinate and withstand the attack from Russia' as the war rages on.

Last week, Starlink won a license for similar use in Israel and parts of Gaza, with timely and diverse information from the conflict zone proving evermore challenging to gather.

'The multitude of tech companies Musk has founded, owns or runs, aimed at bettering societies, increasing knowledge of both earth and space, in addition to enabling communication and connectivity globally… has helped make the world a more connected and safer place,' Nilsen said.

The award accepts nominations from anyone who falls within certain criteria, including work in academia or government - and past recipients of prizes. A shortlist will then be drawn together through March before judges review the nominees for announcement in October.

The winner of the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize is selected by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, an anonymous group of five appointed by the country's parliament.

Nominators are expected to submit their entries by January 31 for consideration, before a shortlist is prepared in March.

The entries are then considered in an adviser review in the summer before judges can announce the majority vote in October. A Nobel Prize award ceremony is expected to follow at the end of the year.

Mr Nilsen revealed to DailyMail.com today that he had entered Musk for his commitment to free speech and global connectivity.

His Progress Party identifies itself with classical-liberal views, espoused by the likes of John Locke and Adam Smith. Some have described the party as standing for both 'conservative liberalism' and 'right-wing populism'.

The nomination ranks Musk among prominent activists vying for this year's Peace Prize.

Nominees include British environmentalist David Attenborough, Australian activist Julian Assange, Pope Francis, UN chief António Guterres, Palestinian journalist Hind Khoudary, NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg, Colombian president Gustavo Petro and former US president Donald Trump.

The prize is one of five Nobel Prizes set up in the name of Swedish inventor and industrialist Alfred Nobel in 1901.

The most recent recipient is Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian human rights activist, 'for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all'.

In 2022, Belarusian activist Ales Bialiatski, Memorial and the Center for Civil Liberties shared the award.

The organisation said: 'The Peace Prize laureates represent civil society in their home countries. They have for many years promoted the right to criticise power and protect the fundamental rights of citizens.

I want to break from Assange case coverage to explain some things about Julian's situation:

The legal arguments matter a great deal here. But more importantly, the eyes of the world are trained upon the small coutroom in the UK.

It is much more difficult for nefarious entities to flout the protocols of justice, when the world is watching.

This move is also not our last card.

The ECHR will be the next step, should the ruling be disfavourable toward Julian.

This means petitioning the European Court of Human Rights to step in.

It remains to be seen however, if Julian would not just be whisked away immediately by the U.S. Or if the UK courts will recognize the authority of the ECHR (British law was adapted recently in their bid for "autonomy" and the sovereignty of the ECHR is murky at best).

If* it comes to extradition. By virtue of a rather clever plan I had the honor of helping devise; we were able to secure some of the best legal representation in the U.S. for him, Barry J. Pollack, one of the greatest trial lawyers in the U.S. (he infamously obtained the aquittal of one of only 2 people acquitted in the Enron case. He also managed to overturn a double murder trial against a man convicted and wrongly imprisoned for 17 years).

In short, we are prepared, as much as can be. Assange has a rock solid legal defense, and a system of global support around him.

But* There are dangers to this still. Assange is not well, he has not been for some time. He suffered a mini-stroke last October, and recovery has been slow. Also, decades of isolation have had an effect on his well being in general. By incriment and measure, he has suffered from depression and had issues with auditory hallucinations and other things. He has more than once threatened suicide rather than be extradited to the U.S. to face the bulwark of a visciously unfair and brutal prison and justice system.

Both his wife, and friends fear for his life should this case go awry.

Assange needs to be free.

Even the best defense and the greatest system of support here is not without very real risks.

Keep your eyes on this case, and be loud across the internet. Push your representatives to be loud as well.

I helped stir this storm up to protect his life, and we must not let that fail.

At risk here is much more than just Julian's life. Your press freedom, your right to speak freely, and most importantly your right to know the crimes of your own government are all on trial here.

Lockbit cybercrime gang faces global takedown with indictments and arrests

LONDON/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An international law enforcement operation led by Britain's National Crime Agency and the FBI has arrested and indicted members of the Lockbit ransomware gang, in an unprecedented police operation that has struck one of the world's most notorious cybercrime gangs.

The United States unsealed an indictment on Tuesday charging two Russian nationals with deploying Lockbit ransomware against companies and groups around the world, the Department of Justice announced.

The indictment was made public as the NCA, U.S. Department of Justice, FBI and Europol gathered in London to announce the disruption of the gang, which has targeted over 2,000 victims worldwide, received more than $120 million in ransom payments and demanded hundreds of millions of dollars, the DOJ said.

Vladimir Putin's secret security force the FSB has arrested a dual Russian-American ballerina on treason charges, officials confirmed Tuesday.

Video posted by a Russian news agency shows 32-year-old Ksenia Karelina being led into a courtroom in handcuffs with her face blurred. It's not clear when the video was recorded.

Karelina is a resident of Los Angeles who became a US citizen in 2021. Last summer, she married her husband, a so far unidentified American.

She was arrested on the same day that Putin sat down for his widely panned interview with Tucker Carlson. The apprehension took place outside of a movie theater in Yekaterinburg. The initial charges related to swearing offenses.

Yekaterinburg, the largest city in the Ural region, is also where Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich was arrested on spying charges nearly 12 months ago.

A subsequent investigation saw Karelina accused of fundraising for a Ukrainian military cause. She is specifically accused of transferring $51.80 from an American bank account to Ukrainian charity, Razom.

Treason charges can carry penalties of up to 20 years in prison.

On her Facebook page, Karelina says that she's from Yekaterinburg and that she studied ballet at the S. P. Diaghilev school.

Karelina is accused of 'proactively collecting funds since February 2022 in the interests of a Ukrainian organization, which were subsequently used to purchase tactical medicine, equipment, weapons and ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine,' the FSB alleges.

'In addition, the citizen in question repeatedly took part in public actions in support of the Kyiv regime while in the United States,' the agency added, reports The Moscow Times.

Russian language outlet Mediazona reports that Karelina has been a US citizen since 2021 and that in 2023 she married an American man.

Karelina graduated from Ural Federal University in 2013. Numerous posts on her Facebook page show her in Baltimore, Maryland, beginning in 2014.

Mediazona reports that Karelina was first arrested on charges of 'petty hooliganism,' for swearing. While in custody, those charges were upgraded to 'high treason.'

The outlet goes on to report that Karelina ceased posting on the Russian social media site VK in 2021 after discussing getting American citizenship on the platform.

Razom, the Ukrainian charity that she's accused of supporting, describes itself as 'contributing to the establishment of a secure, prosperous, and democratic Ukraine.'

On her LinkedIn page, Karelina says that she works as a manager at Ciel Spa Beverly Hills, a role that she's been in since 2019.

Karelina is the latest American behind bars in Russia, in addition to Gershkovich, former US Marine Paul Whelan and Texas dad David Barnes, 65, who last week was sentenced to 21 years in prison in Moscow on child abuse charges.

On the same day that Karelina's arrest was announced, Gershkovich appeared in a Moscow court where he had his pre-trial detention extended.

Earlier this month, Putin told former Fox News host Tucker Carlson in an interview that he was open to the idea of releasing Americans held in Russian jails but did not discuss specifics.

'I do not rule out that the person you refer to, Mr Gershkovich, may return to his motherland. We want the US special services to think about how they can contribute to achieving the goals our special services are pursuing,' Putin told Carlson.

Numerous reports have suggested that Putin is interested in discussing an exchange involving Vadim Krasikov, the assassin responsible for the shooting of Chechen rebel Zelimkhan Khangoshvili in Berlin in 2019.

Anna LeonovaMeet Anna Leonova! Anna Leonova is an Ukrainian composer of contemporary classical music, pianist, composition teacher, piano and music theory teacher, currently living in Qatar. At an early age, Anna took an interest in music and started writing her own songs. Her music has been performed at various festivals and concerts throughout the world, such as “Mammern Classics” ( Mammern, Switzerland), TCU Festival of Ukrainian Chamber Music (Texas,USA), ” Kyiv Music Fest ” (Kyiv), ” Music Premieres of the Season ” (Kyiv), ” Forum of young music ” (Kyiv), “Contrasts” (Lviv), Kyiv Organ Hall. Anna has been previously featured as the ‘Artist of the Week’ on CMUSE and we are certainly glad to have her answering our 3 questions.

1. “When and why did you start playing?”

“I started to play at 7, because I entered to Kyiv Specialized Secondary Music boarding school named after M. V. Lysenko and begun to compose the music at 8 years, because my older sister always composed music. At that time I thought that writing music is naturally for everybody.”

Defense is raising an Article 7 ECHR/ 5th Ammendment argument, stating that multiple forms of classified material have been published and gone unprosecuted, stating there is no precedent in U.S. law for the prosection of journalists.

They are arguing that the previous judge refused to engage that line of legal argument stating it should be resolved in U.S. courts because it is a 5th ammendment issue (due process).

Defense argues that because Article 7 of the ECHR applies, the judge should have had to engage it and acknowledge its legal standing.

(defense for Assange is once more appealing the previous court actions and errors here).

Section 7 of the ECHR protects someone from being prosecuted for future crime. In other words retroactively making something illegal in order to prosecute them.

Sec 7 of ECHR: "No one shall be held guilty of any criminal offence on account of any act or omission which did not constitute a criminal offence under national or international law at the time when it was committed."

Hamas leaders hiding in basement of Israel-built hospital in Gaza

Senior Hamas officials in Gaza are hiding out in a "bunker" built by Israel, intelligence officials suspect: Many are believed to be in the basements of the Shifa Hospital complex in Gaza City, which was refurbished during Israel's occupation of the Gaza Strip.

Shifa, the coastal strip's largest hospital, was built while Gaza was under Egyptian rule, before 1967.

During the mid-1980s the building underwent massive refurbishment as part of a showcase project to improve the living conditions of residents.

Millions were invested in the project, which was overseen by Shmuel Goren, the coordinator for activities in the territories at the time.

The Israeli civil administration in the territories constructed the hospital complex's Building Number 2, which has a large cement basement that housed the hospital's laundry and various administrative services.

During a cabinet meeting a week ago, Shin Bet chief Yuval Diskin said senior Hamas officials found refuge in the hospital basement because they know Israel would not target it, due to the patients in the upper floors. Palestinian sources told Haaretz that not all the senior Hamas leaders are hiding in one place.

Rather, they have spread out, and some are constantly changing locations. Some of the bunkers they are using were linked by tunnels Hamas built in recent years.

China's vast domestic censorship system is spreading abroad, helped in part by U.S. companies, in a way that is affecting the global information environment and posing major challenges to U.S. interests, according to a report written for a congressional commission.

"Foreign countries' media, politicians, businesses, academic institutions, and ethnically Chinese citizens and residents are all major targets of Beijing's harmful, aggressive, and at times illegal overseas influence efforts," with activities including "harassment of the press, including allegedly framing individual reporters for criminal activity," it wrote in a section titled "Battling for Overseas Hearts and Minds."

Defense now raises article 10 of the ECHR saying that Manning's actions in leaking information fall under the protection of freedom of speech and expression.

Article 10 of the ECHR protects whistleblowers if documents are authentic and it is well within the public interest to know.

It protects both their right to recieve and send such information; including in cases of classified documents if, like in Manning's case; said documents were improperly classified to cover up war crimes.

This pertains to the charge against Julian for allegedly (again, unprovably) offering to help Manning procure the documents if needed.

If in fact the documents were improperly classified and covering up war crimes (they were); then Manning as a whistleblower falls under that protection of the ECHR and by extension, the journalist helping break that story in public interest.

This is weighty legally because according to multiple reviews, no one was directly harmed by the release of said information.

The forthcoming second anniversary of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine is a symbolic date, but hardly a cause for celebration. In fact, events have to be studied from a considerable remove in order to see the big picture.

Positional deadlock

Any discussion of a breakthrough on the front and military defeat of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) has long been met with the counter-argument: Let us take Avdeevka (a key Donbass stronghold) first, and then we will talk.On Saturday, that goal was officially achieved.

So what now? In order to crush the enemy and impose our will, we need an effective strategy, a plan for successful combat operations.

By last year, such a system was well established on the defensive side – in the absence of a multiplier advantage,neither side is yet able to break throughthe front with its own means and conduct successful offensive operations.

Back in the autumn, Avdeevka was described as a kind of test for the Russian Army. The Avdeevka operation began with an attempt to cut off the city and create a ring of encirclement 10km in diameter.

On October 10, after massive artillery preparations, mechanized attacks were launched in two directions – across the railway north of the Avdeevka chemical plant and from the south, from the village of Vodyanoye. Like the enemy’s attacks on Rabotino in the summer, these efforts faltered, and our command – relying on artillery, attack drones, and small assault groups –shifted the center of gravity right into the city itself.

And now, after a fifth month of fighting, the Avdeevka epic has concluded. By maintaining pressure along the entire perimeter and forcing the enemy to stretch its reserves, the Russian Army wore down the city’s garrison over several months of fighting. The situation was exacerbated by supply problems. The only paved road, though still passable and sometimes safe (in December, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky even traveled into the besieged city on it), still did not allow for the necessary supplies and rotations, and more importantly, maintaining control of the route itself required a great deal of effort on the part of the AFU.

From November, the defenses of Avdeevka began to crack, first in the industrial area, then in ‘Tsarskaya Okhota’ – powerful strongholds facing Donetsk known since 2014. Attempts to repel these positions diverted the garrison’s forces from other directions, further weakening the defenses.

In theearly days of February 2024, it all came to a head. In a matter of days, Russia cut the northern part of the city in two, crossed the railway, and took the only supply line – Industrial Avenue – under tight fire control.

On Saturday, the battle for Avdeevka came to an end.It marked the most significant shifton the front since the liberation of Artemovsk (Bakhmut) last May.

Let us now talk abouthow the conflict as a whole can be won.

Months of fighting for the center of Avdeevka, infiltrating the city on foot, attacking through empty heating pipes, and supplying through waterways under the railway – this is true heroism on the part of the fighters and commanders, but it is not a strategy that moves the front and decides the outcome of the conflict.

The Russian Army’s advantages in the air and in armored vehicles have not yet been translated into success; even weak Ukrainian air defenses keep our air force on our side of the front, while armored vehicles, which are forced to gather in columns in minefields, are easy targets for drones and precision fire, even if they are few in number.Yes, things are worse for the enemy, and there are fewer chances of a breakthrough, but the fact remains that since theautumn of 2022, when the current front was formed,we have not seen a single successful attack of operational significance, and the frontal shifts in units of kilometers have been achieved as a result of months of exhausting battles fought virtually on foot.

The exhaustion of the front

On the other hand, this does not mean that our command has no strategy for victory. In the absence of effective means to break through the defenses, it is not the movement of the front or the capture of certain lines that isimportant – it is the damage inflicted on the enemy, and it is important that the enemy becomes weaker faster than you do.
