“Beware of Ides of March!”

 

March 15, 44 BC: Julius Caesar was assassinated by a group of Roman senators led by Gaius Cassius Longinus and Marcus Junius Brutus. They stabbed him 23 times at a Senate meeting in the Theatre of Pompey. Caesar's death on the Ides of March ended the Roman Republic and led to civil war. It eventually culminating in the rise of the Roman Empire under Caesar's adopted heir, Octavian, also known as Augustus. The assassination is one of the most significant moments in the history of Rome.
