Details of millions of UK voters accessed by Chinese state, ministers will say

Deputy prime minister Oliver Dowden to update MPs on cyber-attacks by Beijing, some of whom may also have been targets

The personal details of millions of voters are believed to have been accessed in an attack by China on Britain’s democratic process, ministers will say.

MPs and peers are thought to be among 43 people who the government looks set to confirm have been targeted by cyber-attacks backed by the Chinese state. The UK could impose sanctions on individuals believed to be involved in these acts of state-backed interference, one of which was a separate attack on the Electoral Commission in which Beijing accessed the personal details of about 40 million voters.

Ministers will set out full details on Monday, with the deputy prime minister, Oliver Dowden, expected to tell parliament that Beijing is behind this wave of cyber-attacks.

With the UK under pressure to respond, multiple reports suggested that sanctions against individuals thought to be connected with the alleged activity are under strong consideration.

A small group of politicians who are hawkish on China are said to have been called to a briefing by parliament’s director of security, Alison Giles, in relation to the activity.

They include former Conservative leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith, the former minister Tim Loughton, the crossbench peer Lord Alton and the SNP MP Stewart McDonald, the Times reported.

The four are members of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (Ipac) pressure group, which focuses on issues involving the increasingly assertive Asian power.

Some of those affected are understood to be preparing to jointly address the matter publicly on Monday. A government spokesperson refused to comment on Sunday.

At an Ipac meeting on Friday, Luke de Pulford, its executive director, said: “About a year ago the Belgian and French foreign ministries publicly confirmed [Chinese state] sponsored cyber-attacks against our members.

“Other countries have done the same privately. Beijing has made no secret of their desire to attack foreign politicians who dare to stand up to them.”

Earlier this month a US army intelligence analyst was arrested and charged with conspiring to sell sensitive defence information to China.

Meanwhile, reforms of UK spying laws continue to make their way through parliament, with the investigatory powers (amendment) bill also in the Commons on Monday.

The legislation, designed to ensure the UK’s investigatory powers framework remains adequate in the face of evolving threats, includes measures to make it easier for agencies to examine and retain bulk datasets.

If passed, it will update elements of the Investigatory Powers Act 2016 found to require a refresh by a statutory review published by the Home Office in February 2023.

New Study: Moderna's COVID Vaccine Linked to Chronic Hives

https://www.dagens.com/news/new-study-modernas-covid-vaccine-linked-to-chronic-hives

In a press release issued in Denmark by the Danish Medicines Agency, media have been informed that a side effect of taking Moderna's COVID vaccine, also known as Spikevax, may result in chronic hives.

Based on a total of 360 European cases, it is assessed that there is a 'probable' connection in 58 cases, while a 'possible' connection exists in 228 cases.

A suspected side effect is categorized as either probable, possible, or not probable.

The category depends on the strength of the evidence that a symptom could be induced by the medication, or whether other factors are considered more likely causes, the agency writes.

Team leader at the Danish Medicines Agency, Martin Zahle Larsen, told that these are preliminary results.

Therefore, further studies are necessary to determine whether there is an actual connection.

"When we say possible, it's because there is a likelihood that it could be caused by the vaccine," the team leader said.

"The side effect comes in with the frequency labeled 'unknown', because we cannot estimate how rare it is."

Most cases of chronic hives have occurred 7-13 days after the third vaccine dose.

It is concluded that individuals who have received Spikevax have three times the risk of developing chronic hives compared to the general population.

Young men are at particularly high risk, it is reported.

"We do not have proof of the cause, but a qualified guess is that it is due to a very active immune system in young men," says Martin Zahle Larsen.

The vaccine works by introducing a piece of genetic code resembling something from the coronavirus into the cells, preparing the immune system to defend itself if one were to become infected.

Supreme Court Unanimously Rules Against Government In ‘No Fly List’ Case

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/supreme-court-unanimously-rules-against-government-in-no-fly-list-case/ar-BB1krm3f

The Supreme Court unanimously ruled that a man’s lawsuit challenging his placement on the federal government’s “No Fly List” can proceed, finding that the government did not prove the case was moot after removing him from the list.

Yonas Fikre, a U.S. citizen, claimed the FBI unlawfully placed him on the list and pressured him to become an informant.

While the government argued Fikre’s removal meant the case was moot, the Court rejected this view, allowing the merits of the allegations to be examined in lower courts.

“Necessarily, our judgment is a provisional one,” Justice Neil Gorsuch stated.

“Just because the government has not yet demonstrated that Mr. Fikre’s case is moot does not mean it will never be able to do so,” he added. “This case comes to us in a preliminary posture, framed only by uncontested factual allegations and a terse declaration. As the case unfolds, the complaint’s allegations will be tested rather than taken as true, and different facts may emerge that may call for a different conclusion.”

Justice Gorsuch’s opinion acknowledged that further facts could still lead to a mootness conclusion later.

This initial ruling permits judicial scrutiny of the government’s national security policies while avoiding compelled disclosure of classified information, balancing security and due process considerations.

“A case does not automatically become moot when a defendant suspends its challenged conduct and then carries on litigating for some specified period,” Gorsuch said. “Nor can a defendant’s speculation about a plaintiff’s actions make up for a lack of assurance about its own. (For that matter, given what little we know at this stage in the proceedings, Mr. Fikre may have done none of the things the government presumes he has, perhaps wishing to but refraining for fear of finding himself relisted.)”

“In at least some instances, requiring the Government to disclose sensitive information regarding its grounds for placing or removing a person from the No-Fly List could undermine the Government’s significant interests in airline safety and the prevention of terrorist attack,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote.

Fikre’s attorneys welcomed the decision, which allows their client to seek further legal recourse after experiencing alleged harassment abroad linked to his placement on the list.

“We are proud to have helped Mr. Fikre secure justice through this unanimous US Supreme Court decision,” attorneys Lindsay Harrison and Annie Kastanek stated.

“Mr. Fikre was unconstitutionally placed on the No Fly List and stranded overseas for four years, and today’s victory underscores that the government cannot evade review of its national security policies by selectively mooting out cases,” they added.

Fulton County DA Fani Willis says ‘the train is coming’ for Trump and his co-defendants

https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/23/politics/fulton-county-da-fani-willis-says-the-train-is-comingfor-trump-and-his-co-defendants/index.html

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said Saturday that “the train is coming,” referring to her team’s preparation for the case against former President Donald Trump and his 14 co-defendants and whether she was slowed down by attempts to remove her from the case.

Willis, who avoided being disqualified from the election subversion case after more than two months of hearings and court action over her romantic relationship with her lead prosecutor, told CNN she was still working on the case during that time.

“While that was going on, we were writing responsive briefs, we were still doing the case in a way that it needed to be done. I don’t feel like we’ve been slowed down at all. I do think there are efforts to slow down this train, but the train is coming,” she said while attending an Atlanta-area Easter basket giveaway.

“We’re not going to miss or skip a beat because of all the noise or distraction on one case. We’re going to continue to do our work,” Willis said.

But the DA’s office still faces legal hurdles in the case over alleged efforts to overturn the former president’s 2020 electoral defeat. On Wednesday, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee granted requests from Trump and his co-defendants to appeal the decision to allow Willis to continue prosecuting the case.

It is now up to the Georgia Court of Appeals to review the decision not to disqualify Willis. Trump and his co-defendants have argued that a romantic relationship between Willis and the now-former lead prosecutor on the case, Nathan Wade, created a conflict of interest that should disqualify them both.

CNN previously reported the DA’s intention to go to trial before the November election. Willis on Saturday said the original request, which was never granted, was to have the trial in August. “We may ask for that date again,” she said, “but we do understand a case has to go through the steps and go through the process.”

“I’m also realistic that one of the defendants has multiple cases going on and some of them have trial dates that are ahead of ours. So, I’m always going to be respectful of sister jurisdictions,” she said.

The DA said she feels “more loved” by the community after receiving a wave of negative attention over her relationship with Wade, adding that she has felt specifically supported by women.

“I think that women feel like women are treated differently when they’re professionals and they’re proud to see someone that is strong and trying to do the right job,” she said.

Willis said she doesn’t feel as though she needs to rehabilitate her reputation with Fulton County residents, adding, “I’m not embarrassed by anything I’ve done. I guess my greatest crime is I had a relationship with a man, but that’s not something I find embarrassing in any way. And I know that I have not done anything that’s illegal.”

Willis said going forward, all eyes should be on “the charges, the facts and the law, and leave all the drama behind.”

Four people have pleaded guilty in the case. Regarding whether she would consider a plea deal with Trump or any of the remaining co-defendants, Willis said, “If defendants come to us and they decide that they want to resolve their case, I’m always open-minded and reasonable, and we will listen to those explanations.”

She noted that after Wade’s resignation, the DA will now spearhead any potential plea deals. “Now those conversations will be with me and not Mr. Wade, she emphasized, before adding, “I hope that was good for everyone.”

Surrounded by members of the community at Laster Chapel United Methodist Church, posing for selfies with parents and handing out baskets to children for Easter, Willis told CNN, “I am not a perfect human being, but what I am is a hard-working human being, and a human being that loves the community I serve and who understands this seat does not belong to me, it belongs to the people. And as long as I’m here, I’m going to try to do the job in a way that’s honorable.”

CNN’s Jason Morris and Zachary Cohen contributed to this report.
