ship power (electricity) is usually separated from the engine's power source (likely diesel fuel while in harbor). An engine usually outputs energy in different forms, such as torque (for turning), and as electricity (via motors, alternators, etc). Typically, these systems are separated, and if the electrical source is completely removed from a diesel engine, it would continue operating. having said that, sudden black smoke is typically a sign of a massive engine ramp, producing significant back pressure and flushing the exhaust system. could happen when the engine is stalling and ramped, or could happen when engines are being throttled up.

a couple of thoughts:

  • they lost control of the ship and tried doing an emergency system reset, which would not have shut engines down, but reset the electrical systems

  • they lost control of the electrical systems due to some reason, and the electrical system reset itself (hence the electricity went out, and then back on).

  • the electrical system overloaded and a brownout occurred on-board (similar to second point)

  • the engines stalled, and upon engine ramp black smoke is seen

  • the engines were ramped up to drive the ship into the bridge, and upon engine ramp, black smoke is seen.
