When the Battle of Okinawa began #OTD in 1945, six sailors who had died during Commodore Perry's 1853 expedition were the only Americans buried on the island. By the time the battle ended three months later, Okinawa cemeteries would contain the graves of 10,243 U.S. servicemen.
