Democrat wins Alabama special election in early test for IVF as a campaign issue

 

Democratic candidate Marilyn Lands on Tuesday won a special election for a state House seat in Alabama after she made in vitro fertilization and abortion rights central to her campaign.

 

Lands, a licensed professional counselor, defeated Madison City Council member Teddy Powell, a Republican who once worked as a Defense Department budget analyst. A Republican had held the Huntsville-area seat in the state's 10th District.

 

"Today, Alabama women and families sent a clear message that will be heard in Montgomery and across the nation. Our legislature must repeal Alabama’s no-exceptions abortion ban, fully restore access to IVF, and protect the right to contraception," Lands said in a statement shared by the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, which supported her candidacy.

 

Lands had 63% of the vote to Powell's 37% with all precincts reporting.

 

“The voters have spoken and I’m honored to have been considered for this office," Powell said in a statement to Alabama Daily News. "I wish Mrs. Lands the absolute best as she goes on to serve the people of District 10 in the House of Representatives.”

 

Powell's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

 

While campaigning, Lands focused on IVF and access to abortions, telling voters that she supports repealing the state’s near-total ban on abortions, which went into effect after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in 2022.

Tamas said that a system with digital representations of people can change government and can eventually be run by machines. Polly said that the plan is to track people and their emotions so that machines can vote in their place and people won’t have to learn anything about real issues or their consequences. The goal is to supplant human decision-making with a machine interface to replace democracy. Humans will become databases. Individualism is being sacrificed for the ‘greater good’ of being replaced by machines.

Grifters took over a $4.6 million unoccupied home from October 2023 to February 2024 and threw massive parties in an elite area of Beverly Hills near where LeBron James is building a new house and Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez bought a house for $61 million. According to reports, Morgan Gargiulo, an aspiring actor, created a fake lease, moved into the mansion, threw massive parties and charged rent, but didn’t face any legal consequences for his actions. He charged between $500 to $1,500 for entry to his parties. Gargiulo left after he was sued for eviction.

The property has seen an interesting history, previously being owned by Dr. Munir Uwaydah who was accused of hiring a hitman to kill his girlfriend and is currently on the run. The mansion was seized by the court amid a legal battle over its ownership between multiple parties.

The leading congressional expert on Russia's small portable nuclear weapons told United Press International that the FBI has stepped up its investigation of whether al Qaida or other terrorist groups have acquired these deadly devices from Russian stockpiles.

Rep. Curt Weldon, R-Pa., chairman of the Research and Development Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee, said Tuesday that he was briefed by the FBI late last week and that the investigation of whether terrorist groups have weapons of mass destruction, particularly nuclear devices, is now a top priority at the bureau after years of indifference.

"Now they're looking at everything and following up on every lead," Weldon said. It was Weldon, through his R&D subcommittee, who produced over past three years some of the most exhaustive and startling information about the Russian stockpile of weapons that could be an advantage to Osama bin Laden, his al Qaida network or other terrorist groups.

"The question is whether or not bin Laden has had access to nuclear material," Weldon said. "I think it is better than a 50-50 chance that he does."

"Do I think he has a small atomic demolition munitions, which were built by the Soviets in the Cold War? Probably doubtful," Weldon said. But he added that after Sept. 11 the FBI could not avoid running every lead to ground.

In 1997, Weldon brought former Russian security chief Gen. Alexander Lebed before his committee. Lebed testified that perhaps 100 small nuclear devices were missing from inventories under his control. Lebed said the devices were a "perfect terrorist weapon," made to look like suitcases, "and could be detonated by one person with less than 30 minutes of preparation," according to committee documents.

The Russian government immediately tried to discredit Lebed's testimony, but Weldon's committee brought a prominent Russian weapons scientist, Aleksey Yablokov, before the committee in 1998 who reported that he knew the Russians produced small nuclear weapons for combat use.

Yablokov was vilified when he returned to Moscow as a "traitor" for his testimony. Yablokov sued one major Russian magazine over this vilification, Weldon said, and won a 30,000-ruble judgment against the publication.

Perhaps the most startling testimony came from a defector from the Russian military intelligence service, the GRU, who testified in 1998 that the Russians secretly pre-positioned weapons, including small nuclear devices, in the U.S. and other countries around the world to be used for sabotage by its agents in time of war.

This witness said it was his job while working undercover in Washington from 1988 to 1992 as a correspondent for the Russian news agency Tass to locate places where these weapons could be hidden both around Washington and in other parts of the country.

Weldon has described the weapons in this testimony as "small nuclear weapons that can fit into a knapsack or a briefcase or suitcase and are designed to be delivered and detonated by one or two people."

He created a mock-up of one in a suitcase form that he uses in speeches and Congressional hearings based on descriptions from Russian sources. He keeps the mock-up in his office.

The authorities are using satellite images to track the small farms to send them cease-and-desist letters. Small dairies have filed a lawsuit against the state.

Oregon has also shut down small commercial/ market gardens for using well water that is considered to be owned by the public, even if the well is on private land. Oregon is also monitoring well water usage.

"According to Soviet military plans, very well advanced, maybe a few months, maybe a few weeks, of course, a few hours before real war would be placed against his country (the U.S.), Russian Special Operations Forces need to come here and pick up weapons systems, because they will fly here as tourists, businessmen.

"According to their tasking, in a few hours they need to physically destroy, eliminate American military chains of command, President, Supreme Commander in Chief, Vice President, Speaker of the House, military commanders, especially to cut the head from the American military chain of command," Lunev said.

He said that the Russians had a plan to sabotage industrial, communications and power targets as well.

Weldon said later the FBI discredited Lunev, saying that he exaggerated things, but another federal agency that Weldon declined to identify protects Lunev in an undisclosed location in the U.S. He said Lunev's credentials as a ranking GRU spy assigned to the U.S. have never been questioned.

Later Vasily Mitrokhin, a KGB official, disclosed in his best-selling book "The Sword and the Shield" that the Soviets had secreted weapons and explosives near NATO facilities throughout Europe for use in a war. Weldon said that Belgian officials located and dug up some caches near NATO's headquarters

The backpack nukes are part of some 12,000 tactical nuclear weapons that the Russians possessed in 1991 when they agreed to a unilateral arms reduction with the first Bush Administration. The Russians were to destroy 2,000 warheads a year from 1991, which would suggest there is only a handful left.

The U.S. destroyed the bulk of its weapons, but Weldon said that there is no evidence that the Russians have conducted such a program.

"That's part of the problem. I've continually called for a treaty with Russian and really a worldwide effort to ban or to limit tactical nukes," Weldon said.

"There has been no effort and we have had no success in getting Russia to decrease their tactical nukes. They feel they act as a buffer for Europe; the proximity of European countries. We just don't know whether they have total control of their atomic munitions."

Ukraine adopts spending reforms amid corruption scandals

A new unit will set long-term plans for purchases of food, clothes, fuels, and other equipment for the military

 

Ukraine's Defense Ministry has announced the creation of a new logistics support planning department that will draw up long-term procurement plans for the military. The move comes after a number of high-ranking Ukrainian military officials have recently been arrested on suspicion of corruption and embezzlement.

 

Deputy Defense Minister Vitaly Polovenko explained that the goal of the new unit is to reduce the number of emergency purchases for the Ukrainian military, which often result in the government overpaying for sub-par goods.

 

According to a statement on the ministry’s website, the new procurement department will be responsible for monitoring the market, analyzing prices, and determining the approximate costs of things the army might need, such as food, clothing, fuels, lubricants, and other technical equipment.

 

Final purchases, however, will now be made by the State Logistics Operator, according to the statement.

 

Just one week before the announcement, Ukrainian authorities detained theformer head of the military’s central food supplydepartment on accusationsof illegally receiving assets worth more than $1.5 million between 2022-2023, including a new car, an apartment in Kiev, and 53 land plots across the country.

Since you and God are not separate because the kingdom of heaven is within you and Hod dwells in His Kingdom and your body is the temple, then when you think a thought that feels less than good, it’s because you are thinking in a way that God is not and so your perception becomes distorted and then you feel the negative emotion. (Sadness, anger, frustration, despair, hopelessness, rage. The moar intense the emotion the more opposite it is from what God is thinking about same thing.

 

Try it. On the bottom of a piece of paper write down what is making you feel anger. Then at the top of the paper wrote down the EXACT OPPOSITE. The exact opposite is aligned with what God is thinking and you will know this by the way it feels BETTER. LOVE. God LOVES. The debil hurts. You touch fire, it hurts, you pull away. Do the same with your thoughts. Then you get to witness God in real time working in your life and you KNOW. You’ll think it’s “MAGIC” but it’s God and the way He intended life to be for us and what Jesus was trying to show everyone.

White Hat sources told Real Raw News that the 100,000-ton Dali, a Singapore-flagged cargo ship, may have been unmanned when it collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Maryland early Tuesday morning, causing a total structural collapse of the 1.2-mile bridge.

Best geological map for a European rover on Mars

A team of European scientists have published the most detailed geological map of Oxia Planum – the landing site for ESA’s Rosalind Franklin rover on Mars. This thorough look at the geography and geological history of the area will help the rover scout the once water-rich terrain, in the search for signs of past and present life.

 

The map gives scientists a head start before Rosalind Franklin lands there in 2030. Four years in the making, this map identifies 15 units with characteristic geological features that can help decide how the rover explores the area, interprets its surroundings, and tries to collect evidence of primitive life.

 

Oxia Planum is located near the martian equator and contains sedimentary deposits that are nearly four billion years old. On a geological scale, this will be the oldest landing site visited by a rover on Mars. The region is rich in clay minerals formed in the presence of water. These rocks are ideal for preserving evidence of the earliest life forms. This makes it an excellent location to look for clues as to whether life once existed on the Red Planet.

 

Mapping science community

During COVID lockdowns, the Rosalind Franklin science team began an online training programme for around 80 volunteers to map the chosen landing site.

 

The work was divided into 134 one-square-kilometre areas, so that the team could fully cover the estimated landing area. Scientists used a web-based system that allowed everyone to work on the map in parallel. The software was provided by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and set up at ESA.

 

Data came from the Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSIS) onboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter and several instruments on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), including the HiRISE camera, which returns images from Mars orbit at 25 cm per pixel.

 

The mapping leads then pieced together the information on all the areas to form a coherent map that shows the geology of the landing site in unprecedented detail. The map includes the main types of bedrock, and structures with distinct shapes like ridges and craters. It even features the material that rests on top, for example blown by the wind, or thrown long distances when meteorites impacted the surface.

 

The result is the highest resolution map of Oxia Planum yet, created at a scale of 1:25 000, by which every centimetre equals 250 metres on the martian surface. An average drive of 25 to 50 metres a day for Rosalind Franklin would be one to two milimetres on the map.

 

The map has been published in the Journal of Maps, along with a scientific paper that includes observations and interpretations of each geological unit and will soon be followed by a second publication exploring what these geological units mean for scientists ideas about what the environment of ancient Mars was like.

 

Why a map for Mars

The exercise familiarised scientists from different teams with the geology and geography of the landing site years before the rover starts operating on Mars. The Rosalind Franklin science team now has a better idea of potential science targets, the type of terrain the rover will be facing and some hazards on its path.

 

“This map is exciting because it is a guide that shows us where to find the answers. It serves as a visual hypothesis of what we currently know about the different rocks in the landing site. The instruments on Rosalind Franklin will allow us to test our knowledge on the spot when the time comes,” explains Peter Fawdon, one of the lead authors from the Open University.

 

ESA’s Rosalind Franklin rover is equipped to search for evidence of past and present life on Mars thanks to its drill and scientific instruments. It will allow science teams on Earth to plan the strategy for Rosalind Franklin’s daily expeditions on Mars as they identify the best place to drill below the harsh radiation environment and daily swings in surface temperature.

 

Rosalind Franklin will be the first rover to drill two metres below the surface, acquiring samples from where there are higher chances of preservation for biosignatures than on the surface and analysing them with its onboard laboratory.

A presidential election is looming. Control of the Senate is uncertain. The window may be closing for the Democratic Party to replace the oldest Supreme Court justice nominated by a Democratic president.

 

Paul Campos, a law professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, remembers how this story went last time, and he’s begging for a different ending.

 

“Sotomayor has been an outstanding justice,” he said. “But the Ruth Bader Ginsburg precedent ought to be extremely sobering. … The cost of her failing to be replaced by a Democratic president with a Democratic Senate would be catastrophic.”

 

At 69, Sonia Sotomayor is the oldest justice on the Supreme Court to have been picked by a Democrat. And now, Democrats may be about to lose the Senate, White House or both. But on the left, there is little open debate about whether she should retire.

 

The relative silence recalls the almost total lack of pressure on Ginsburg to retire exactly one decade ago. Ginsburg, seemingly betting she would outlive a Republican-held Senate and then Donald Trump’s presidency, died of pancreatic cancer at age 87, just weeks before Joe Biden won the 2020 election. When Trump nominated her replacement, Amy Coney Barrett, and she was confirmed on Oct. 26, he cemented the 6-3 conservative majority that then took less than two years to fully overturn Roe v. Wade, among other seismic jurisprudential shifts.

 

Fearing a repeat of history, a handful of people who were critical of Ginsburg’s judgment, are wearily reprising their warnings ― including Lucas Powe Jr., a Supreme Court historian at the University of Texas at Austin.

 

“I would love to see Sotomayor retire,” Powe said. “I would love to trade her for a 50-year-old justice.”

 

Outside of a handful of commentators and journalists, though, few others are eager for Sotomayor to go. Her fierce dissents and willingness to speak sharply about her frustration with the conservative majority have made her one of the most admired voices on the left. She is also the first and only Latina on the court, a milestone Democrats are wary of sullying by pressuring her to step down.

Sotomayor is still youthful by the skewed standards of the Supreme Court. The average retirement age for recent justices is in the 80s, and since 1970, the average tenure has lasted about 28 years. When proponents of court reform propose mandatory term limits, they usually suggest a maximum tenure of 18 years. Sotomayor, who was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009, has served on the court for only 15 years.

 

The current average age on the Supreme Court is 63, and working at such a relentless pace at almost 70 “isn’t what I expected,” she said at a public appearance in January. “What choice do you have but to fight the good fight? You can’t throw up your hands and walk away. …That’s an abdication. That’s giving up.”

 

Although she took the unusual step of traveling with a medic in 2018 ― a precaution possibly related to her Type 1 diabetes ― it’s not clear whether she was dealing with a serious health concern.

 

And the fact that she is younger than Justices Clarence Thomas, 75, and Samuel Alito, who is about to turn 74 ― two conservatives who, naturally, face no political pressure to retire under Biden ― breeds resentment around calls for her to step down while they remain.

 

“Sotomayor is probably thinking, ‘I can outlive a Trump presidency,’” Powe said.

 

She may also be sensitive to the perception that she is timing her retirement for partisan purposes, he added. She and Barrett are in the midst of a publicity tour to promote the concept of civility.

 

But there is a nightmare scenario for Democrats in which Trump would get to appoint his fourth ultraconservative justice if the Democratic Senate does not act now. Today, Democrats have a 51-49 majority in the Senate ― one more vote than they had two years ago, when they successfully confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson to replace Justice Stephen Breyer, who retired at age 83.

‘Assured failure’: Ex-White House lawyer provides new details of final days of Trump’s 2020 election gambit

Pat Philbin gave his first public testimony about the chaotic final days of the Trump presidency.

 

Donald Trump’s deputy White House counsel, Pat Philbin, was nervous.

 

It was just a few days until Jan. 6, 2021, when Congress was slated to certify Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election, and Trump had suddenly resuscitated a plan to replace the leadership of the Justice Department with Jeffrey Clark, a little known DOJ official who Trump expected to mount a sweeping nationwide effort to help him remain in power.

 

So Philbin called Clark, a colleague from their days in private practice dating back to the 1990s and tried to talk him out of it.

 

“I tried to explain to him that it was a bad idea for multiple reasons,” Philbin recalled Tuesday at a long-delayed disbarment hearing for Clark. “He would be starting down a path of assured failure … If by some miracle somehow, it worked, there’d be riots in every major city in the country and it was not an outcome the country would accept.”

 

It was Philbin’s first public testimony about the chaotic final days of the Trump presidency since he left the White House. Though Philbin has spoken to both the Jan. 6 select committee and the federal grand jury that indicted Trump for his effort to seize a second term, no transcript or recording of his remarks has even been released.

 

Philbin’s description of his interactions with Clark shed new light on the frenzied effort by Trump to remake the Justice Department into a tool of his bid to cling to power despite losing the election — a remarkable new account more than three years after a mob of pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol in his name. His testimony followed Richard Donoghue, a former acting deputy attorney general.

 

Together, the two men described a White House that had let down all guardrails, with conspiracy theories about election fraud reaching Trump, who was an eager recipient of even implausible claims of fraud. Clark, too, embraced some of those claims, they said.

 

Philbin described feeling relief in the first days of January 2021 when he heard that Trump had ditched plans to appoint Clark as acting attorney general. But he quickly learned in discussions with his boss, Pat Cipollone, and two top DOJ officials — acting attorney general Jeff Rosen and his deputy Richard Donoghue — that the effort had been revived. The men agreed that Philbin should speak to Clark, owing to their decadeslong relationship, and attempt to discern what was happening.

 

Philbin, who testified for about two hours on Tuesday,described Clark as wildly misinformed about claims of election fraud— countenancing a theory about “smart thermostats” being used to manipulate voting machines — and not sufficiently cognizant of the havoc it would wreak on the country if his plan succeeded. But he said Clark seemed “100 percent sincere” in his beliefs. (Clark is a world renowned Legal Scholars with double majors, insinuating he was misinformed is bullshit. These attys are trying to keep their law license, so they throwing under the bus.)

 

“I believe that he felt that he essentially had a duty,” Philbin said. “I think Jeff’s view was that there was a real crisis in the country and that he was being given an opportunity to do something about it.”

 

When Philbin warned Clark that there would be riots in every major American city if Trump reversed the outcome of the election, Clark responded, “Well, Pat, that’s what the Insurrection Act is for,” Philbin recalled.

 

Clark, in Philbin’s telling, was referring to a 19th-century federal law that permits the president to use the military to quell civil unrest, an indication that he recognized the grave implications of his efforts. Though it was Philbin’s first time publicly discussing the exchange, the conversation was captured in special counsel Jack Smith’s indictment of Trump — without naming either Philbin or Clark, though the identities of both speakers were easily discerned. On Tuesday, Philbin was asked to elaborate on this discussion.

 

“I don’t think I said anything on the phone. I just thought that that showed a lack of judgment,” he said. “Triggering riots in every major city in America, you’ve got to be really sure about what you’re doing and have no alternatives … In my estimation, that was not the sort of situation we were talking about.”

 

Philbin was the second witness to testify in a disciplinary proceeding that could result in the loss of Clark’s license to practice law. D.C.

Pursuant to their shared goal of advancing bilateral space cooperation as declared by their leaders, the Government of the United States of America and the Government of France held their second meeting of the Comprehensive Dialogue on Space in Washington, D.C., on March 20-21, 2024.

 

This meeting was co-chaired by representatives from the Executive Office of the President’s National Space Council and National Security Council for the United States, and by representatives from the Secretariat-General for Defense and National Security (SGDSN) and the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs for France. Principal U.S. participants were from the Executive Office of the President’s Office of the National Cyber Director; the Departments of State, Commerce, Homeland Security, and Transportation; the Department of Defense, including U.S. Space Force and U.S. Space Command; the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA); and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. The French delegation was made up of representatives from the Ministry of Economy, Finance, and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty; the Ministry of Armed Forces -including the French Space Command (CdE)- and the National Centre for Space Studies (CNES).

 

The convening of this second Comprehensive Dialogue on Space continues an initiative announced by U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and French President Emmanuel Macron in November 2021 to ensure a whole-of-government approach to bilateral space cooperation. This Dialogue underscores the importance of the U.S.-France alliance’s more than 60-year relationship in space and recognizes the growing nexus of civil, commercial, and national security space activities and the increasingly interconnected nature of all three sectors.

 

At the meeting, U.S. and French officials exchanged information on respective national space policies, including the U.S. Framework for Novel Space Activities and France’s forthcoming update of its national space law. Both sides reiterated their strong determination to expand already robust bilateral cooperation in a variety of areas, including addressing the climate crisis; advancing national security space cooperation and information sharing; and strengthening bilateral commercial space cooperation.

 

The participants held extensive discussions about challenges to our shared economic and national security interests. Both sides are determined to continue their close coordination in strengthening the global governance of space activities by promoting the widest possible accession to and compliance with the Outer Space Treaty, as well as the development and implementation of voluntary, non-legally binding international instruments to promote the sustainable, secure, and responsible use of outer space.

 

Both sides resolved to deepen the bilateral coordination of national security space capabilities, particularly given the growing scope of space-enabled and related threats. They also resolved to strengthen the coordination of national security space activities with allies and partners around the globe, including by leveraging innovative commercial space capabilities, to ensure access to critical space-based services. Both sides also confirmed their interest in working together to strengthen the security of space systems and protect critical space-related infrastructure against the full spectrum of hazards and threats.

 

The participants discussed ongoing bilateral cooperation in space exploration and science and opportunities to strengthen our partnership in these areas. Both sides are determined to continue collaboration on scientific missions to enhance understanding of our solar system and investigate the origins of our universe, including through NASA’s Artemis missions. The participants also expressed their intent to discuss further cooperation in exploration, particularly on Lunar surface activities.

 

Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to maintaining a robust dialogue with Artemis Accords signatories, deepening the implementation of the Accords in practice, and utilizing multilateral fora to advance the peaceful, responsible, and sustainable exploration and use of outer space.

Both sides recognized the important role of Earth observation and space science, to include weather observation and global environment observation from space, in supporting climate change mitigation and adaptation. The participants also noted mutual interest in collaborating on a project to develop a common Coastal Zone Digital Twin to monitor climate change and flood mapping. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to global climate leadership through the Space for Climate Observatory and open dissemination of Earth observation data and decided to continue to develop operational tools to make this data actionable for governments and local communities.

 

The participants celebrated the launch in December 2022 of the joint U.S.-French Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission, which now measures the height of nearly all water on Earth’s surface. SWOT is developing one of the most detailed, comprehensive views yet of the planet’s oceans and freshwater lakes and rivers. Combined with other information, unprecedented data from SWOT is helping researchers and scientists determine how flood conditions evolve during extreme events, such as those experienced this year in northern California.

 

Both sides expressed their intent to cooperate on Earth science missions in the fields of aerosol, cloud, convection, and precipitation (ACCP) research, Designated Observables from the U.S. 2017 Decadal Survey, that is expected to include time-differenced microwave radiometers from CNES to measure convective vertical motions.

 

The participants recognized the important contributions of the private sector in expanding our economic activity in outer space and welcomed efforts to strengthen industry cooperation. Both sides acknowledged their shared desire to create a safe and transparent environment for commercial activities in outer space, including evolving and emerging space activities, by clarifying government and private sector roles and responsibilities and supporting a timely and responsive regulatory environment. To create a free and fair market competition internationally, both sides noted the need to update and harmonize space policies, regulations, and other measures that govern commercial activities worldwide.

 

The participants also discussed multilateral cooperation, including our work in the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS) and separate but complementary UN space security fora. Participants recognized that each forum has a vital and complementary role to play in ensuring that activity in outer space is safe, secure, and sustainable, so that space systems can continue to deliver benefits into the future.

 

Both the United States and France reaffirmed their commitment to working through UNCOPUOS to promote the safe and sustainable use of outer space for peaceful purposes. For both sides, implementing the UNCOPUOS Space Debris Mitigation Guidelines and the UNCOPUOS Guidelines for the Long-Term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities are priorities. The United States and France look forward to continued engagement on the topic of long-term sustainability in the UNCOPUOS Long-Term Sustainability working group. Both the United States and France welcomed the progress towards the establishment of a new UNCOPUOS agenda item focused on Dark and Quiet Skies and expressed their commitment to astronomical sciences and the important benefits provided by commercial satellite services.

 

Both sides also underlined the importance of continued close coordination, bilaterally and with like-minded partners, to constructively support the work in UN space security fora, with a particular focus on the second OEWG on reducing space threats through norms, rules, and principles of responsible behaviors when it starts its work in 2025 to build upon the meaningful discussions during the first OEWG in 2022 and 2023. They stressed that the development and implementation of voluntary norms of responsible behavior and transparency and confidence-building measures, represent concrete first steps to promote mutual confidence among States while reducing the mistrust, misunderstanding, and miscalculation which may lead to unintended escalation. In this regard, both sides welcomed the adoption of United Nations General Assembly resolution 77/41 and called upon all States to commit not to conduct destructive direct-ascent anti-satellite missile tests. Both sides welcomed States making and observing this national commitment in order to ensure that this proposal becomes an internationally-recognized norm of responsible behavior.

 

Both governments recognized the importance of the Comprehensive Dialogue on Space and reaffirmed that this Dialogue would support cooperative relations between the two countries across ministries, departments, and agencies.

 

Both sides concurred on holding the third meeting of the Dialogue in Paris.

Disney is dropping its lawsuits against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, apparently giving up its fight against his decision to pull the massive corporation’s special status as its own government that was granted to the Magic Kingdom years ago.

 

The fight over Disney’s authority to run the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which essentially made it its own government, erupted because of the company’s attacks on the state for trying to protect children in schools from the influences of an LGBT ideology.

 

Disney officials repeatedly blasted the state for what critics, inaccurately, have called a new “Don’t Say Gay” law that actually doesn’t say that. It just, as its name states, provides “Parental Rights in Education.”

 

The state of Florida responded to the attack by canceling Disney’s Reedy Creek authorities and replacing it with a new state board to govern the district, putting Disney on the same level as other companies in Florida.

 

Now a report from the Daily Mail reveals Disney is dropping its legal actions opposing DeSantis’ moves.

 

The report called the decision “a major win” for the new board overseeing the land of Disney.

 

“The settlement agreement on Wednesday includes Disney acknowledging eleventh hour deals it made with the outgoing Reedy Creek Improvement District are now null and void,” the report said.

 

At the time the new state district was being created, Disney reached special deals with the old Reedy Creek board, which it controlled, to take over a long list of governmental functions under the new board.

 

The report noted, “Walt Disney Co. made these last-ditch efforts in an attempt to solidify property rights and grant the theme park additional powers as DeSantis appointed a new board to oversee the area and hold the corporation accountable to laws and taxes in Orlando.”

 

It was then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek who publicly attacked the governor’s policies on education and specifically his plans for protecting parental rights in education.

 

“No corporation should be its own government,” DeSantis’ communications director, Bryan Griffin, said of the action on the lawsuits.

Long March 6A launches second Yunhai-3 satellite

China added to its fleet of secretive meteorological satellites with the launch of Yunhai-3 (02) late Tuesday.

 

A Long March 6A rocket lifted off from Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, north China, at 6:51 p.m. Eastern (2251 UTC), March 26 . The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. (CASC) later confirmed launch success, revealing the previously unstated payload to be Yunhai-3 (02).

 

The launch plans were initially revealed by airspace closure notices. Few details regarding the satellite have been made available.

 

China’s space authorities and state media describe the satellite briefly as for atmospheric and marine environment surveys, space environment monitoring, disaster prevention and reduction and scientific experiments.

 

The Yunhai series are, however, assessed to be military meteorological satellites by some Western analysts. These are believed to include Global Navigation Satellite System Radio Occultation (GNSS-RO) satellites to collect atmospheric data. China also operates civilian Fengyun meteorological satellites.

 

The first Yunhai-3 satellite, launched in November 2022 on an earlier Long March 6A, is cataloged by the U.S. Space Force’s 18th Space Defense Squadron (SDS) in a near-polar, near circular 849-kilometer-altitude orbit.

 

That first Yunhai-3 launch saw the breakup of the Long March 6A’s upper stage. Nine of 37 pieces of debris tracked by 18 SDS from the event remain in orbit.

 

New Long March rockets

Tuesday’s mission was the fifth launch of the Long March 6A, lifting off from a specifically constructed launch pad at Taiyuan spaceport. The 50-meter-long, 530-metric-ton rocket features two kerosene-liquid oxygen stages and four solid propellant side boosters. It is the first Chinese rocket to use a combination of liquid and solid stages and boosters.

 

The Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST), the rocket’s manufacturer and subordinate to China’s main space contractor, CASC, plans to launch the first Long March 6C rocket later this year. This will use the Long March 6A core stage without the solid boosters.

 

The 3.35-meter-diameter Long March 6A series bears little resemblance to the 2.25-meter-diameter standard Long March 6.

 

CASC stated that Tuesday’s launch is the start of high-frequency launch of the Long March 6 series this year.

Astronomers have been surprised by a "gold rush" of new galaxies, racking up 49 discoveries in just 3 hours.

 

The gas-rich galaxies were uncovered by a team using the MeerKAT radio telescope located in South Africa. They have been dubbed the "forty-niners," a callback to the nickname given to the thousands of gold miners who flocked to California during the state's Gold Rush, which peaked in 1849. The nickname is now carried by the San Francisco 49ers American football team.

 

The team of astronomers certainly wasn't playing around when it stumbled across the nearly 50 new galaxies. They were attempting to study star-forming gas in a single radio galaxy. Instead, they found 49 new galaxies in observations lasting about 180 minutes, thus demonstrating the power of MeerKat when it comes to revealing star-forming gas.

 

Research leader Marcin Glowacki, from the Curtin University node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) in Western Australia, views the 49 new galaxies as "gold nuggets" for astronomers. Their discovery is arguably no less fortuitous than the discovery of the first gold chunks at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California, which kick-started the California Gold Rush in 1848.

 

"I did not expect to find almost 50 new galaxies in such a short time," Glowacki said in a statement. "By implementing different techniques for finding galaxies, which are used for other MeerKAT surveys, we were able to detect all of these galaxies and reveal their gas content."

 

Many of the 49 newfound galaxies are located in close proximity to each other and form galaxy groups.

 

Of these collections that come in an array of different shapes and sizes, three in particular have captured the imagination of Glowacki and colleagues. Of four galaxies seen in the same image, three are connected by the gas content that runs throughout them.

 

"These three are particularly interesting, as by studying the galaxies at other wavelengths of light, we discovered the central galaxy is forming many stars," Glowacki said. "It is likely stealing the gas from its companion galaxies to fuel its star formation, which may lead the other two to become inactive."

 

"We hope to continue our studies and share even more discoveries of new gas-rich galaxies with the wider community soon," said Glowacki.

 

Glowacki recently teamed up with ICRAR summer student Jasmine White, who also analyzed short observations made by MeerKAT to discover even more gas-rich galaxies.

 

"This discovery highlights the raw power of the MeerKAT telescope as an imaging instrument," research co-author and University of the Western Cape researcher Ed Elson said. "The methods we developed and implemented to study the forty-niners will be useful for MeerKAT large science surveys and smaller observing campaigns such as ours."

 

The team's research was published online Tuesday (March 26) in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari on Wednesday said as nations increasingly rely on space-based assets for building strategic advantage, "militarisation and weaponisation" of space have become the "inevitable reality". He said this in his address at a seminar on "Aerospace Power in Future Conflicts" at Subroto Park here.

 

"Through the annals of human history, the skies have often been regarded as realms of wonder and exploration, where dreams take flight and boundaries dissolve into the vast blue expanse," he said.

 

Yet, beneath this calmness lies a domain "fraught with competition where contest for aerial superiority" has shaped the destiny of many nations and decided the outcome of many wars, the chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF) said.

 

"As we navigate these uncharted skies, air power being a key component of national power, would undoubtedly play a pivotal role and also serve as a symbol of national strength, a tool for peace and cooperation," he said.

 

Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari said over the last few decades, understanding of the military operational environment has "significantly transformed" from primarily a force, time and space-driven battlefield to an arrangement of systems capable of simultaneous and independent operations across multiple domains.

 

"We all need to acknowledge that the wars of the future will be fought differently," he said.

 

In his address on Wednesday, Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari added that space has also emerged as a "critical domain for conduct of military operations", wherein seamless communication, navigation and surveillance capabilities would enhance survivability of modern military forces.

 

"As nations increasingly rely on space-based assets for building strategic advantage, militarisation and weaponisation of space has become an inevitable reality," he said.

 

Air and space control along with denial capabilities "will prove to be decisive" for furtherance of all operations. For that to happen, "we would need to gain and maintain not only information superiority but also decision superiority", he said.

 

"Emerging technologies like CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensors, smart decision support matrices, manned-unmanned teaming and robust and redundant C2 networks are critical capabilities that need to be developed," the IAF chief added.

From May through September 2021, BGE will construct eight transmission towers; five towers will be erected in the Patapsco River and equipped with water-level structures to provide protection from potential water-traffic collisions. The additional 3 towers will be land based with 1 on the Hawkins Point side of the river and 2 on the Sollers Point side. The work may require periodic lane closures on and approaching the southbound side (695 inner loop) of the Key Bridge.

‘Difficult days ahead for Serbia’ – Vucic

The country’s president is expected to meet Western diplomats to discuss Kosovo’s bid to join the Council of Europe

 

Serbia is facing several extremely difficult days, President Aleksandar Vucic has said, adding that the country’s national interests are at stake. The Balkan nation has consistently opposed efforts by its breakaway province of Kosovo to join international bodies, but the region has recently made headway in this respect.

 

The Serbian leader posted a cryptic message on Instagram on Wednesday, warning that “difficult days are ahead for Serbia,” and that “at this moment, it is not easy to say what kind of news we have received in the last 48 hours.”

 

The developments “directly threaten the vital national interests of both Serbia and [Republika] Srpska,” Vucic noted, without providing further details, saying only that he would introduce his fellow citizens to the challenges ahead in the coming days.

 

Republika Srpska is a partially autonomous Serb-dominated region within Bosnia and Herzegovina.

 

“It will be hard… We will fight, Serbia will win,”Vucic added.

 

While it’s unclear what Vucic was referring to, he is poised to meet withsenior diplomats from the US, UK, Germany, France and Italyon Wednesday, according to Pink.rs website. The agenda for the meeting is expected to revolve around Kosovo’s application to join the Council of Europe, an international human rights watchdog.

 

According to Pink, Vucic “will not miss the opportunity to repeat… that it was a perfidious move that also has symbolic weight since it was made on the very day that was written in black letters in the collective memory of Serbs.”

 

The outlet was referring to the 25th anniversary of the start of NATO’s bombing campaign against the former Yugoslavia over what the bloc called “disproportionate use of force” against an ethnic Albanian insurgency in Kosovo.

 

Also up for discussion will reportedly be the decision of the Permanent Commission of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly to elevate the breakaway region of Kosovo to the status of associate member. A final decision on the matter is expected in late May.

 

Meanwhile, Radio Sarajevo has suggested that the Serbian president was reacting to the decision of the high representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina,Christian Schmidt, to change the country’s election law. The Office of the High Representative is an international organization that oversees the 1995 Dayton Agreement, which put an end to a bloody war in the Balkan nation.

 

Schmidt said on Tuesday thathe would use his authority to introduce digital voting reformsas part of a pilot project in the country.

 

The move was met withpushback from Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik, who said Schmidt had nothing to do with the electoral process=, adding that it “belongs to the people living in Bosnia and Herzegovina.”
