technically this is not a good enough experiment as the holes are too close. they're subject to the flatness of whatever they did the experiment on. grading and surveying and all. you'd have to move them at least 500 feet a part for it to work.

 

you'd probably have better luck putting a mirror 1000 feet away from a Laser, making sure both are true flat or plumb, and seeing where the reflection lands back at the laser. if done correctly, the laser light should be slightly above the laser itself. unless the gravity of the earth bends it. then it's a pointless experiment.
