NATO will oppose sending troops to the battlefield in the Ukraine conflict, echoing the long-standing US stance on the matter, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported on Sunday.

According to a draft policy document to be approved at the bloc’s summit in Washington in July, NATO would adhere to a “no boots on the ground” principle, which the Italian outlet described as “one of the key phrases” in the paper.

However, the US-led military bloc is also preparing to make changes,the newspaper noted. WhileWestern efforts to support Ukraine are currently being spearheaded by the so-called Ramstein Group led by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin,this mission will reportedly be redelegated to the NATO headquarters in Brusselsat the July summit. The move stems from the fact that the lion’s share of Ukraine aid is being provided by NATO members, Corriere della Sera explained.

The newspaper also reported that NATO would continue to strengthen its military footprint in Eastern Europe and the Baltic states, with plans to bring the bloc’s combined combat strength in the area to 300,000 troops.

The reported decision not to send troops to Ukraine comes after French President Emmanuel Macron refused to rule out deployments, arguing that this rhetoric is a part of a “strategic ambiguity” approach aimed at deterring Russia. He also suggested Western troops could appear in Ukraine “if the Russians were to break through the front lines, [and] if there were a Ukrainian request.”

Earlier this week, those remarks were echoed by US House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who argued that Washington must continue to support Kiev with arms to stave off its collapse. If Ukraine falls,“there’s a significant likelihood that America will have to get into the conflict… with our servicewomen and our servicemen,” Jeffries claimed.US President Joe Biden, however, has said he is determined not to send troops to Ukraine.

Moscow has accused France of “belligerent rhetoric,” warning that statements about a possible Western troop deployment to Ukraine are escalating the conflict. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday that if French troops appeared in the conflict zone, “they would inevitably become targets for the Russian military.”

On Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry announced an exercise to test the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons,in response to what it called “provocative statements and threats” by Western officials."

Gardner, a Democrat first elected in 2016 to become the city’s first Black circuit attorney, resigned in May 2023. Prosecutor adds 22 St. Louis officers to exclusion list

St. Louis’ top prosecutor has added 22 more names to a list of city police officers who are not allowed to bring cases to her office, after a national group accused the officers of posting racist and anti-Muslim comments on social media.

The 22 new names brings to 59 the total number of officers on Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner’s “exclusion list” that she first announced in August. Gardner has said the original list included officers with credibility concerns, but declined to elaborate.

Gardner said seven of the newly-added officers are permanently banned from presenting cases for warrants. The other 15 will be reviewed to consider conditions of reinstatement.

The Justice Department has contacted the families of victims of two Boeing 737 Max crashes as it closes in on a decision over whether the company violated a deal that saw it escape criminal prosecution.

In a letter obtained by ABC News, families have been invited to attend a meeting at the end of this month where they will be informed of the DOJ's decision as to whether the beleaguered company breached a deferred prosecution agreement.

‘Oh my god’: live worm found in Australian woman’s brain in world-first discovery

It was a fairly regular day on the ward for Canberra hospital infectious diseases physician Dr Sanjaya Senanayake, until a neurosurgeon colleague called him and said: “Oh my god, you wouldn’t believe what I just found in this lady’s brain – and it’s alive and wriggling.”

The neurosurgeon, Dr Hari Priya Bandi, had pulled an 8cm-long parasitic roundworm from her patient, prompting her to call on Senanayake and other hospital colleagues for advice about what to do next.

The patient, a 64-year-old woman from south-eastern New South Wales, was first admitted to her local hospital in late January 2021 after suffering three weeks of abdominal pain and diarrhoea, followed by a constant dry cough, fever and night sweats.

By 2022, her symptoms also included forgetfulness and depression, prompting a referral to Canberra hospital. An MRI scan of her brain revealed abnormalities requiring surgery.

“But the neurosurgeon certainly didn’t go in there thinking they would find a wriggling worm,” Senanayake said. “Neurosurgeons regularly deal with infections in the brain, but this was a once-in-a-career finding. No one was expecting to find that.”

The surprising discovery prompted a team at the hospital to quickly come together to uncover what kind of roundworm it was and, most importantly, decide on any further treatment the patient might require.

“We just went for the textbooks, looking up all the different types of roundworm that could cause neurological invasion and disease,” Senanayake said. Their search was fruitless and they looked to outside experts for help.

“Canberra is a small place, so we sent the worm, which was still alive, straight to the laboratory of a CSIRO scientist who is very experienced with parasites,” Senanayake said. “He just looked at it and said, ‘Oh my goodness, this is Ophidascaris robertsi’.”
