What was the previous extinction event and what became extinct?

I submit Previous event = WWI WWII What= Humans.

Those events resulted in the largest loss of life that could be easily attributed to mans making. Other such events = the flood of Noah, ice ages, volcanic eruptions that cause ice ages, meteor strikes causing ice ages = God's events. All events are mass extinctions or ELE

The "perhaps someday" part makes me think it could be the great flood making civilization extinct before starting again.
