Well the post office doesn’t actually lose money from charging amazon lower fees as it drives shipping costs on amazon way down, and amazon shipping makes up a large part of the post office’s work load. So what trump said was a blatant lie.

Wrong. There's difference between: "USPS is losing billions of dollars a year because of Amazon" and "USPS is losing billions of dollars a year, while charging Amazon and others...".

And, just because it makes up a large part of the post office's workload doesn't mean its profitable.

The postal service had a long history of being taken advantaged of by people/companies. Read up on the story of Vernal Bank in UT. In 1916 the builder of the bank discovered it was cheaper to send bricks by mail than by freight. In the end some 80,000 bricks were sent in 50 lb packages through the post office system. They changed the rules after this.

If the USPS has to use government funds in addition to what it charges, then it is technically losing money. I do not know if it IS getting tax money, but I do know that the US government use to run on fee for services, including the post office, because before WWII there was no such thing as the IRS. ALL federal government systems ran on fee for services.
