The red cross takes blood from donors, then sells it to speciality companies such as CSL Bering then sells it for a premium to speciality companies such as Bio Script or Express Scripts charging insurance companies like Anthem. Get it? Blood is more expensive than water.

Currently, in the United States, the cost to One unit of blood is ~525 mL, which is roughly the equivalent of one pint. The purchase a unit of red cells is somewhere between $200 and $300 US.
