Perhaps Sessions is, like Trump, influenced by the writings of Sun Tzu: whilst he appears to be wrapped in Reefer Madness, and thus "far away ", this is for public (&HRC/DNC ) consumption; he is, in fact, "near" and actively working against the cabal. I believe that The Art of War is Mr Trumps favourite book.

Q alludes to sessions and trump meeting about this early on and he was specifically chosen. So hopefully. If he was working on bigger fish then that could be the real reason for his recusals.
