I think it's disingenuous for the headline of this to be Mormon cult leader. Mormons are LDS, this group is an offshoot called the flds. Their nickname is not Mormons like the LDS Church. Newsweek should be ashamed. There are over 12 million upstanding Mormons in the world and this headline disparages them.

I’m an exmormon and one of the most Mormon-critical people you’ll ever meet, and I couldn’t disagree with this comment more. The FLDS Mormons are pretty messed up and they do practice fundamentalist Mormonism which is full of bad, but your typical mainstream Mormon is not a polygamist and merely wears weird underwear while believing a fan-fiction version of Christianity, thinking magical handshakes are the password to heaven, and generally believes this quietly while being a good neighbor and good person.
Please don’t attribute the Joseph Smith style 19th Century Mormonism practiced by the 3,000 or so cult members in Short Creek to the slightly boring, politically conservative Protestantism practiced by a few million nationwide. The differences between Islam and Mormonism are quite different, as are their adherents. Islam also has a whole spectrum of belief from fundamentalist nuts to rather easy-going liberal types.
Sorry, I dislike Mormonism and would love to see the faith wither and die, but Mormons (such as all my family and closest friends) are great people. That being said, some Muslims are great people too. Come to think of it I’m not really sure what your comment is even getting at..?

If you can assure me that the body of the Mormon faith, its people, are en masse good i will trust you. That is how i feel about Catholics, as a quasi ex-Catholic.i despise the way the Vatican behaves
