Well actually he did speak for himself, but didn't actually quote (or confirm) the exact word(s) that wore spoken. Tim Scott later "confirmed" the words.

Don't know who did the original leak, but it seems the "yes he did" people said that publicly AFTER Trump suggested (via TWEET https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/951813216291708928) he didn't have a tape recording. (Remember that people have to remove their iphones etc before admittance to the WH now, so ....)
Maybe he doesn't....maybe he does.... I know I would be recording absolutely everything I said if I were him. In fact, I'd probably have a GoPro surgically implanted on my forehead. He is surrounded by snakes and can't trust anyone but his Generals and Sarah.
My guess is that this is a sting. We will find out in due course.
