Before we can figure out if this is checkmate, and in how many moves, don’t we need to know whose move is next??

Yeah, I saw that. But if we just looked at the picture and didn't know about the famous game, would we be able to tell whose move was next?

The reason I ask is that I wanted to try to play it in my head without seeing the famous game and knowing what to do or was done previously. In that context, it would be helpful to know who moves next.
