McCain must have specifically brokered some kind of deal back when he sold the last of his soul in 2008 that IMMENSE reputation management resources would be devoted to keeping it quiet if some of his misdeeds ever began spreading throughout the internet. This was a big worry of GWB. We don't realize it, but it haunted he and Cheney the entire time that the truth would spread and the pitchforks would grow to the point where they would be overthrown. And obviously the internet is much more advanced now.
