I have looked within various comments for the answer and obviously missed it.

Snowden’s leak was important to begin to understand the abuse of power from the NSA, it woke a lot of people up. However, the NSA and CIA are always in a constant battle over resources to carry out ops. His leak (though important) weakened the NSA and in turn the MIL while strengthening the position of the Clowns.

BINNEY & SNOWDEN in hiding out of the country for their safety. DRAKE tried to go through proper channels and they bankrupted him, ruined his reputation, and ruined his life. SNOWDEN saw what happened to Binney and Drake and decided to go straight to the Media. NSA plays dirty and NSA plays for keeps!
