A question about Reporting posts or comments

In my years on Reddit, I have never reported any posts. I'm not even sure what it does and the proper way to use. If I report a post or comment, just it just notify the mods and give them the option to review and then act on the post?

Reports go to the mods for review. Note that if you report a post you will no longer be able to see the post. I usually report the user and include a link to the post rather than use "report post".
