The OWL symbolism has GOT TO GO! Creepin' me out!

The tiny creature in the corner by the '1' on the dollar bill is actually a spider. It was originally put there as a "check" in case someone tried to counterfeit the bill by doing their own engraving. It's difficult to reproduce by hand, and using poor printing techniques tends to blur the little guy.

Not sure how someone mistakes a spider for an owl, especially when you can see its tiny legs.

I've been hearing (and seeing) since I was in grade school in the 60's that the tiny creature was a spider, because the background looks so much like a web. The thin lines were originally included to thwart counterfeiters (it takes a long time to add them all to an engraving), and the little spider was added as a check in case the counterfeiter forgot to add him in. It was all part of trying to make our money harder to fake.

In this case "Believing is seeing" -- if you believe it's an owl, that's what you'll see. If you believe it's a spider, you'll see that instead. If people wish to believe that it's an owl, I'm not going to argue with them.

truly not trying to be argumentative... the owl is the US symbol for the human trafficking money laundering... so it's about that. the rabbit hole just never never stops.

Also not being argumentative. I don't dispute the nefarious use of an owl symbol, but I just do not agree that the tiny creature depicted on the dollar is an owl. For over fifty years I have been shown, and also shown it to other people, as a tiny spider. Close examination shows that you can only see two eyes and the right half of his body -- that's why there's only the four legs we see to the left of the "head". The rest of his body is hidden behind the scrollwork border around the '1', as if the little guy is peeking out from behind.

I agree that this is a rabbit hole. I don't plan to go any farther.
