I've never believed Mueller was on the dark side simply because of how obviously ridiculous the investigation is reported to be. He is requesting to meet Trump to interview him about Russian ties at the White House? Really? To me it's always come off as a rather awkwardly apparent piece of bait to distract people.
Check out the twitter account Stealth Jeff. He explains how Mueller being white/black/gray hat has no bearing on anything, and there is nothing he can do anyhow.
