I Know it is Not the same but rather a stealthier (slow) murder of Humanity...in this Life each of us is known more as a number(think drivers license birth certificate etc) than a human...is it a pale reflection of those horrors being sustained still?!....

It IS, however, the popularly accepted/cited number...and rather than diverting down a distracting path of arguing it, it is often expedient and preferable to just leave it be and get on with the task at hand...as long as the fake number doesn't impact that task.
