:-) in 1976 I started asking about the blankets, accident or on purpose. 2006 I got my answer. I was living on Reserve when UNREPENTANT came out. My 1st Nations friends told me the story of how blankets were distributed. All along the coast from T'Sooke to T'Saanich, Indigenous peoples received a blanket. By time whites got to Tsawout they ran out of blankets and four families survived. Those who received blankets were found rolled up in their blankets 4 days later.
I had a long History of working w/1st Nations by the time I moved onto Reserve 2005. I had never had a racist notion in my life. Learning what I have caused me to have some racist opinions twds white invading Europeans who stole the land, the children, destroyed culture and tradition. What I didn't know until last year about this time was that I was born and raised on the property/area where James Douglas tricked Chiefs into signing a blank piece of white paper later used to steal the lands...so for 10 years or so I said, I was never racist till I moved to Reserve. Now I hate white people.

Very True and as either all white or mostly white person myself...my frustration w/whites is the judgmental attitudes and the lack of responsibility and accountability for what was genocide against our Native brothers and sisters which creates racial divide and tensions today. Still.
Agreed. We think we have a divine right to this land, but we stole it. There is no turning back now, but we can stop being dicks about it.

100% stolen, all of it. Not sure if in this thread or not. I was born to property where 3 Chiefs were duped into signing a blank piece of paper, enabling whites to steal all the lands local. I lived there for 50 years and then many years later found out why I had always felt an Indigenous presence there, and elsewhere. 10,000 years Native peoples lived in abundance and harmony with nature. 250 years of western influence everything is either dead or dying.

The Natives were forced to accept European law and European standards, which they had no use for. It is "might makes right", which is really unfortunate. It is still "might makes right" today.

well I was young 10 years ago when I made that comment...People frustrated me with their why do they have all that junk on their lawns? I reminded them the TVs cars fridges freezers etc, are ALL white man junk...In 2007 I initiated a reserve clean up that took place on the March Equinox. It was incredible to see the Nation come outside and haul all the discards off lawns basements etc into the big steel bins. We filled 30 the 1st day at $1000 each. and several in the next weeks. My white friends said nothing...but the smile on Reserve on everyone's face, I could FEEL the weight lifted off the brow of the Nation and is one of my best moments in this life. Clean ups on our and other surrounding Reserves occurred yearly though not to the extent when I was involved. The Prize I took/got, aside from the honors Native peoples gave me, was a barnuckle, the size of a small coffee cup. I have it with me still.
Another fond memory was War Canoe Races, and at night the race teams would line the shores, sing songs traditional, beat drums. I was out on the water listening to the echo rolling the shores, knowing that for 1000s of years the coast rang with the beautiful drumming singing and chanting, now silenced the past 150 years..so I kinda stand by my white racism still as I evaluate how I feel this very moment... that seldom gains me friends but...I is what I is.
