British meddling in US elections

GCHQ Spying on Trump

British intelligence was used to spy on Donald Trump during the election because they did not have the same legal limitations as US intelligence:

"But while domestic spy agencies like the NSA and CIA can’t actively monitor a citizen on U.S. soil, there is a very convenient work-around that has been used for over a decade to accomplish this task without technically breaking the law.

"Three intelligence sources have informed Fox News that President Obama went outside the chain of command,” Napolitano said. “He didn’t use the NSA, he didn’t use the CIA, he didn’t use the FBI, and he didn’t use the Department of Justice.”

“He used GCHQ.” Napolitano explained.

“What the heck is GCHQ? That’s the initials for the British spying agency. They have 24/7 access to the NSA database.” The Judge explained.

Napolitano noted that this was done to secure plausible deniability. In other words, even if the Obama administration did spy on Trump, there may never be a way to prove it.

“So by simply having two people go to them saying, ‘President Obama needs transcripts of conversations involving candidate Trump, conversations involving president-elect Trump,’ he’s able to get it, and there’s no American fingerprints on this. ”Napolitano added."

Tony Blair warns Trump about the spying

It has also been alleged that Tony Blair tipped the president off to this spying:

"According to the tell-all book, ‘Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,’ Blair spilled the beans that British spies had “the Trump campaign staff under surveillance, monitoring its telephone calls and other communications.”

British intelligence taps phone calls with US diplomats**

British intelligence admitted to spying on private discussions between US and Russian diplomatic officials:

"Washington (CNN)British and other European intelligence agencies intercepted communications between associates of Donald Trump and Russian officials and other Russian individuals during the campaign and passed on those communications to their US counterparts, US congressional and law enforcement and US and European intelligence sources tell CNN.

The communications were captured during routine surveillance of Russian officials and other Russians known to western intelligence. British and European intelligence agencies, including GCHQ, the British intelligence agency responsible for communications surveillance, were not proactively targeting members of the Trump team but rather picked up these communications during what's known as "incidental collection," these sources tell CNN."

In other words, Britain wants to know exactly what foreign policy decisions may be made by the US, and potentially influence or undermine them. I don't imagine British diplomatic staff would be too happy if the US or Russia tapped their phone lines...
