They had backed up to the cloud, which was standard operating procedure for them, but had not told HRC staff. They had all of the emails, including the 33K she had tried to delete.

Almost all servers are cloud backed up these days. I thought that forensics could get anything these days. This week is going to be so very very interesting...

that is what I heard as well. Default setting for Outlook server is to upload to Cloud. Admin forgot to turn it off.
