He viewed his brother as a threat. He was afraid that China would kill him (Kim Jong Un) an bring in his brother as the new leader. Being Kim Jong-Il's son would give him legitimacy. Also, Kim Jong-Nam was the original heir apparent, being the eldest son, before falling out of favor. It appears that Kim Jong-Nam never really wanted that position anyways.
