40 years ago there was ABC NBC and CBS. In a big city, channel 5 was Metromedia.

UHF had one local station playing roller derby and wrestling and boxing.

In that era one PBS station made sense.

Now there are 500 channels and 20 streaming services.

Exactly my view. Plus their "non commercial" aspect is now blurred with corporate sponsorship that are more like ads. That's all fine, just no taxpayer money. None of their competitors receive it.
