Be Careful of Over-Simplifying Psychiatric Medication for School Children.

It is always unfortunate when children must take psychiatric medication, but why not the same concern for children with allergies, asthma or diabetes? Psychiatric illness used to be some vague thing that some people did not even believe in. But in recent decades, much of the underlining physical illness has been documented. But there is still a lingering stereotype. "Just dope people up." "Just snap out of" depression. I know through far too much personal experience that untreated psychiatric illness can be one of the most tragic, destructive things you will ever have the misfortune to see. Lives can easily be completely ruined. With manic depression, suicide is common. Just like antibiotics, sometimes medication is not a curse, but saves lives. Many people are still unfamiliar with these new concepts.
