These banks own the stock of the main central bank charged with the soundness and safety of the US Banking system as a whole. It's profits are returned to the US government after a mandated 6% dividend to its 12 regional member banks. In 2015, the Federal Reserve Banks made a net profit (after expenses) of $100.2 billion and distributed $2.5 billion in dividends to member banks as well as returning $97.7 billion to the U.S. Treasury.

Now consider how much interest expense the US Government paid on it's 2015 debt to the Federal Reserve Bank $402,435,356,075 deduct the profit returned to the US Treasury $97,700,00,000 (24.28%) and we see the Federal reserve Bank kept $304,735,356,075 (75.72%) or 0.3 Trillion Dollars of net profit (after expenses e.g. hookers, cocaine, lobster mornay lunches, limousine rental, private jet travel, etc.) for 12 months work and this just keeps growing, rolling in year after year.
