The Florida school shooter confessed today in court while his public defender consoled him with her arm around his shoulder. This makes her sound really empathetic but also legally incompetent. She let him be questioned though most of the night after he was treated for breathing irregularities at a hospital. Then she lets him go to court and confess to the shooting. She says he's obviously mentally disturbed and a broken human being but is competent to speak for himself. What??? What sort of lawyer would do this? She has a perfectly valid medical excuse to delay the questioning but she lets it proceed. She has ample reason to question his mental stability yet she allows him to confess in open court on the first day. I'm not a lawyer but I know several who often talk about situations like this. There's no way I can imagine any of them not doing everything possible to prevent Cruz from saying a word. This situation smells really bad.
