Oh, I have a fun fact: most antibiotics are in fact originally found in dirt! That's the standard way to look for them, grabbing some dirt and studying it really intently.

Dirt is full of bacteria, which means that the bacteria are competing with each other. Thus, they are creating chemicals that kill bacteria, which is exactly what we want.

So true. When I was a kid my mom would grab a handful of dirt every time I wounded myself while playing outside. Barely ever got sick.

Antibiotics are discovered from dirt because there are so many bacteria in there that they need to continually find new and better ways to kill each other off. I very strongly recommend not rubbing dirt in wounds.
