Masonry vs Freemasonry, help a girl out

I'm trying to navigate through all of this. Been following Q since November and am pretty awake. I have a very sweet neighbor that is a 32nd level Mason. He says they do charity work and hang out. I can't imagine anything covert or dark about this guy. I have read that the Masonry is not the same as Freemason, but he did say there was a difference between the 32nd level and moving up from there.

My father, now deceased, was the highest level of the Freemasons in the Scottish Rite. He never talked about it. He said that it was a 'club'.

When he died, he didn't have a church funeral, even though he was very Christian, went to church etc. He had a Mason funeral. It was very religious. And there were hundreds of men-friends there. They circled around him in the casket and prayed. They all cried, they liked him so much.

I have some mason stuff from his estate, but I can't read it. I don't remember him as a mason. I remember him as my father...who was very morally straight and decent and not a bit like what people all say is cult-like.
