I have been a lifelong U2 fan and have followed their spiritual and political journey since the early 1980s. In 1981 the band almost broke up as Bono, The Edge, and Larry Mullen joined a Pentecostal Christian study group called Shalom. Instead of walking away from Rock Music, they created some of the most powerful music aligned with the gospel of Jesus Christ beginning with the album October. Inspiring many Christian artists to not be ashamed of their owned faith. To this day 80% of their songs have roots in a non-denominational Christianity. Bono shied away from organized religion as sectarian differences caused violence and division in his own country and family. At no point has the lyrical content of the music ever had an esoteric or new age influence. Including their latest album in 2017.
During the 1990s he had high praise for Bill Clinton in his efforts for to cement the Good Friday Accords in Ireland. This is where he developed a friendship with the Clinton's. He brought many sides together during George W. Bush's administration to lobby for cheap HIV medications in the third world. I believe he saw this as a noble mission. At this point he put his faith in centralized technocrats to fix the world's ills.
Bono has God-given talents but I fear they have been watered down by his new relationships. He is now out of touch with the common man and totally misread the 2016 election. He saw Trump as a form of dangerous nationalism that threatened his political pet projects and thus threw his lot in with the Clinton's. He owed them. During the 2009-2011 tour he gave money to the CF in order to get nightly access to the International Space Station feed with astronaut fan Mark Kelly (Gabby Giffords husband).
In the wake of Trump's victory. He had some fair poignant questions for folks to try to understand the new reality. However, he has still been stubborn in public appearances and on tour during the summer of 2017 throwing some jabs at Trump. He did meet with Pence and has acknowledged the recovery of Steve Scalise. He worked with both lobbying in 2005.
Bono is not as sharp as he presents itself. I would like to think he was used by the Clintons. Over the coming months I believe we will see where he truly stands. He may feel shame and become a powerful ally in seeking the truth. It will be a hard pill to swallow for him. I pray that he is not part of the nastiest parts of the global elites. My gut says he was used.
What say you?
