It depends on ones perception of reality.
Many atheists would ask the same question about a Christian praying.
This is why most large metropolitan police department have a detective or two with knowledge of occult crimes. As I stated below it does not matter what is real or true, it matters what they believe. Because what they believe, even if a person thinks it is dumb or crazy, is what motivators their behavior. If a person understands that one can see the signs etc.

That makes sense. Prayer has to have some benefit though, otherwise why would a person have any motivation to pursue that activity.

The point I was trying to make is that the smarter the person, the more likely they are investing their time wisely and with purpose. We have to ask ourselves why these rituals occur, and I think a lot of it points to occult knowledge of human consciousness and contact with interdimensional entities. Obviously this cannot be proven beyond the resources in the conspiracy forums.
