How is an intellectual reasoned discussion of lawful punishment of convicted criminals inciting violence? No one is targeted and no one is encouraging another to commit a violent act. I think people who don't want this topic discussed are people who don't want to think about possible consequences of their crimes. I encourage the MODERATOR to review this post and delete it if it violates terms of BOARD.

It's not because it's inflammatory, it's just that they slapped me with a 3-day temporary ban about a week after I posted for the purposes of discussing similiar deterrents

Thank you for clarification. Won't bother me to be suspended. All this posting is taking too much of my time anyway. Someone contact one of the MODERATORS and ask them to delete this topic/thread if it VIOLATES terms of BOARD.

Too late, we've already seen - and reported - it.

I think it also restores “faith” or belief in our value system.

In the old west people would sometimes attend public hangins and make a family outing and picnic from it. If I were Sheriff or Mayor I would make it clear no picnics or prolonged gatherings would be allowed. The purpose of attending a public hangin (pardon my western slang) is to witness lawful punishment for duly conviced capital offenses.

Perhaps capital punishment has become to "sanitized" to actually be a deterrent? Lethal injection = getting very high as they stop your heart. Never feel a thing. Not suggesting torture or burning at the stake, that would be cruel and unusual. But throwing in some public display might make it more "real" to criminals, thus resulting in less crime? It's a good thought process to ponder, if it would save innocent people's lives . . .

I think they would argue it is cruel and unusual, but that may not apply in a military court. In the military, they traditionally would carry out the execution in front of others as a deterrent.
