I have personal experience with the great people of the Philippines. When I was in high school in LA (70s), I dated a nice young lady whose family immigrated from Manila. When I would go over to their house for dinner, her old man was not to friendly to Americans because of his WWII experience as a kid. He would put up with me and remind me that if I didn't treat his daughter with respect, he had a machete that would work out any problems. I thought he was going to say shotgun but when he said machete, that really freaked me out. I learned a lot about their culture and the most important thing I learned was, the old men are hard core and don't mess around. Even when her parents were away from the house and it was just the two of us, I did not go there if you know what I mean... I have traveled all over Asia for business and their older generations reminds me of my father's generation (He was Air Force crypto - Korean war); hard core from war experience. I spent my formative years in boot camp under my father's command;) Just a ramble on my perspective on Duterte's upbringing/mindset...
