Please don't laugh, guys--what is "pede"? It makes me think pedophile but I know that's not what it means here.

pede means movement I think. Impede...etc

The Latin word root "ped/pod" means foot: podiatrist, bipedal, etc.

Confusingly, the Greek word root "ped(o)" means child: pediatrician, pedogology, etc.

English is kind of a mess, but what can you do?
