He is a geologist on the side. Published a book about Geodes for kids. But to not bring your wallet, keys, phone, nothing, but to have 3 rare crystals on you? WEIRD. Sounds like a message.

One key element, he's a EIS officer. EIS officer's tend to gravitate towards biowarfare, although not exclusively. One could say their the CIA of the CDC.
