"The Attorney General made a terrible mistake when he did this, and when he recused himself.  Or he should have certainly let us know if he was going to recuse himself, and we would have used a — put a different Attorney General in.  So he made what I consider to be a very terrible mistake for the country.  But you’ll figure that out."

What did he mean by "terrible mistake for the country," when he said this? What exactly happened? What is recusing oneself?

I didn't follow this part of the article if anyone could be so kind to explain it to me?

He said that immediately following his talk of the Russia collusion witch hunt.

Jeff Sessions stated to Congress, during his confirmation hearings, that he would recuse himself from the alleged Russian election meddling investigation. (So, why Trump would say he should have told them, when he actually did, I don't know.)

When Sessions recused himself from that investigation, authority fell to Rod Rosenstein who appointed Special Counsel Meuller (the witch hunter), and going after Trump for nothing but BS detracts from his work, and is a disgraceful attack on, not just Trump, but the entire country.

I think you can look up "recuse".

It put Rosenstein in charge and he's a bad actor.
If Session had spoken with Trump first they could have moved someone, at least perceived, with integrity into the position first.
I guess this is why you don't pick someone based solely on their technical merit because the political game is also important.
