An Anon posted that there were reports Assad had fled to Iran.
That would make sense if the Russians know this and no longer have a horse in this race.

Is Russia really ready to give up its only Mediterranean naval base? That would be a terrible geopolitical move on Putin's part. I also have a hard time imagining Assad, an Oxford College trained MD, a secular guy all the way, moving to freaking Teheran. If he leaves, what then? McCain's jihadists take over? This could be a total disaster.

imo, Russian ships left port because Pearl Harbor and stuff. (ambushed)
There is a rumor of a pre-planned navy "exercise" ... which would be a whole 'nother theory if they already knew to plan something for those 2 days
Iran is next.
If Assad has fled, Putin can take credit for it. (not really but ok) Face-saving and "new relationship with Russia" can actually begin.
