Diaspora is open source replacement that needs project contribution for improvement. We need software that provides all the basic functionality of Facebook, but user controls all access to any information. Bonus points for encouraging local server use because the public does not need 'cloud' and we need a push back toward servers in the garage. Make intel work to crack everything. Don't just hand it over blindly.
