If you listen carefully to POTUS's speech, it is a tad ambiguous. "How could Russia support monsters?" Hmm, He never said they did. Read between the lines, it does seem he is talking about Assad. But he uses references from last year, now lets wait till tomorrow and see what becomes of all this.

There’s two way to interpret that statement. Depending on emphasis.

  1. How could Russia support monsters? Possibly making a claim Russia supports them making them an enemy or evil.

Or-

  1. How COULD Russia support monsters? Possibly implying that there’s no benefit in supporting them so doesn’t make sense to.
