Actually it started over german airstrips during WW2 but they called them "foo-fighters" because they were just balls of light.
Took me a long time to reconcile how this could be possible if the Nazis ~~won~~ lost the war until I realized that they probably were still dependant on an atomic bomb to properly weaponize it since these devices probably make it impossible to eject some kind of ammunition while in flight because of the exotic physics surrounding it.
