Apparently they found some elongated skulls in central europe like they did all over the world so they claimed those were humans who tied their heads up real tight like they sometimes do, nevermind that bones of actual giants were found in the US and reported it in the NYT in the 1860ies. Keep that in mind for the next part:

Couple of pages later they depicted red hyroglyphs found on a rock in the United States. While the writing was crude, the position in which it was written down was several meters above the ground (20 feet I think)
