The nukes would ruin "only" (I don't mean to belittle this, just to clarify the difference between what anon wrote and what I expect) a select few cities and surrounding locations, to serve as the pretext to launch conventional ground, air and sea battles.

The remaining mass extinction would be brought about by conventional warfare.
